Are the guns sold at Walmart cheaply made?

Don't get me wrong. I like walmart, it is useful for things I want to get but don't mind it being a little cheaper, or less well made.

I was just curious as to what you guys might think/have had experience with.

Would it just be better for me to purchase what I want from a local gun store like I already do, or from like Bass Pro, Gander Mt. etc.?

They're not cheap at all. Wal-mart is the number one gun retailer in the nation. Thereby, they have the bulk purchasing power to sell them for less than most gunshops.

I own a couple from them.

But their rules are a bit funky. Like three people have to review your gunforms, and they walk you to the front of the store with your firearm.

Other than that... No worries!

I find that Gander and Bass are overpriced on everything, except maybe shotgun shells. I'd rather support my LGS as long as they are nice people and give me a fair price. Good, name-brand firearms from Wally are the same as from anywhere else that sells them. Sometimes they have nice specials sold through them only, like the 22" barrel 10/22s they have had occasionally.

One thing to look out for is Walmart specific firearms. Case in point, I picked up a Savage 22 bolt rifle. I assumed it would come with the accutrigger, as they are standard on those rifles. But, alas since Walmart buys so many rifles from Savage, they order theirs without the accutrigger to bring a bit lower price. The difference was only maybe $20.00, in my opinion they could have sold the exact rifle Savage distributes to everyone else without deleting the better trigger, and I would have happily paid the few extra bucks. They keep trigger locks on everything, so I didn't see the trigger issue until I had already bought it. I managed to "fix" the heavy trigger with a small shim, but I should not have needed to do so. I guess they get a better deal from the manufactures if they delete a part, and buy in large enough numbers to off set the run. Just a side note, so if you want all the features you expect, use a local gun shop you trust, unless it is the exact same gun in every detail.

This is a typical Walmart tactic. Demand a supplier make a cheaper product so they can sell the brand at a lower price than anyone else; or in the alternative, that they make a model exclusively for Walmart.

Also if it exclusive to walmart they don't have to worry about price matching, cause no one else has the same one.

I purchased a Marlin Model 60 Stainless Steel w/Scope from Walmart last July...$217.00 + tax Exactly the same Rifle a friend of mine bought at Bass Pro Last May w/no Scope for $249.95 + tax "On Sale".

Several years ago, I was looking for a Henry pump-action .22. No one locally had them in stock, but several places offered to order one for me, including the Wal-Mart gun counter. They had the best price, so that's who I went with.
As Rev' noted, being walked to the door after the purchase was a bit quirky.

Oh, I don't blame them for walking gun purchasers to the door. Otherwise, you might go stark raving crazy and shoot a herd of them fat women that seem to congregate where 2 main aisles come together and stare up into space waiting you you to butt-rub by them to get out of the store. Perfectly reasonable precaution.

Um, does Walmart still sell firearms? Every Walmart I have been in lately does not sell them. So why is that?

The Walmart in Haymarket sells guns, both Manassas stores and Woodbridge do not. They had a Colt 6920 two weeks ago for $1099. Would have snapped it up if I had the money on hand. Went back on payday and it was gone.

My guess is that Walmart sells guns where it judges that their customers will not disapprove, and does not sell guns in more affluent and upscale markets where they would expect to find more liberal/progressive/statist customers. Walmart is very much about what they think their customers think about Walmart. And you can bet the farm that for each store they have, they know where its customers are coming from and what the socio-economic status of those customers and their community is.

Walmart in Warrenton has a couple rifles left. Haven't seen any new stock come through since the SHTF. I wonder if they are just selling off what they have and are not ordering any more.

My local Wal-Mart salesman was telling me that there is also a "Wal-Mart" version of the Ruger 10/22 when I was inquiring about when they may get some in. I had no idea that there was such a thing and thought he may be full of it until reading these posts.

I bought a Mossberg 500 from wally world and I didnt like the escort to the door where my gun was turned over, I have not bought another gun from them since.

What type of firearms does Walmart sell? Just 22's and M16 like rifles, or do they sell shotguns and pistols as well?

They sell shottys, too. No handguns that I am aware of. They display some of them on Walmart.com, but have a special order catalog, too.

I haven't step foot in a Walmart in almost two years...I wont give those scum bags a penny of my money.
My ex-sister-in-law was (still is) a big regional manager for them....And basically her job (6 figure plus) was to make sure Walmart employees never worked enough hours to get benefits.
Until they start treating their employees like human beings ...I will never shop there.

Bought my son a shotgun for competition and he used it for 2 years with no issues, it was $100.00 cheaper than what I could find at local stores.

Walmart depends on the ignorance of the masses to run out every mom and pop store around. They don't give a rats butt about anyone or anything other than money. If you want to think the TV or gun you bought from there is of the same quality as the one you get at the local GS, go right on ahead.....
