New guy from Woodbridge

Hello,

I just moved from Dumfries to Woodbridge (what a change! haha).

I'm 18 and I absolutely love cars, particularly older cars because theyre so much simpler to work on/modify.

I'm the only person in my house that sees firearms as interesting and well...cool! Everyone else sees them evil things that can only cause harm, it's rather depressing actually. I didn't start getting into them until my aunt took me to shoot Sporting Clays and some Wobble Trap when I was 14. Ever since I've just been blown away at how much there is to learn and experience about other types of guns. I'm particularly interested in small pistols now. I look at alot of guns with the mentality of "how would it fair in a Zombie Apocalypse?". It's fun to kind of plan and imagine what you would do in a situation like that. Though I hope it never happens.

Because of the way my family feels about guns I had to wait until my 18th birthday to get a hold of one. So the first thing I did was go out and buy a shotgun as a present. Stevens Model 67 with a 28 inch barrel. Love it and it's sticking action to death!

Anyway, I was thinking of trying to go to a gun show for the first time, but I'm kinda nervous. Is it anything like a car show?

Also, does anybody happen to know where I might find a cheap little Jennings J22, Raven 25,? What are some others that fit into the same cheap little pocket gun category? I'm just looking for a cool little pistol to tinker with and take to the range every once in a while.

One day 3 years from now I'd like to own/carry a 1911 Officer (that's the compact one right? 3.5" barrel?) I saw Al Pacino brass check one in "Heat" and the gun is just gorgeous to me.

I hope this isn't too much in one post

Isn't Woodbridge over by South Hill? If your anti-gun family moved with you, they may be shocked to know that most everyone carries around there. At least, they did when I was around there. Doubt much has changed.

You'll be making more trips to the hospital than the range with those guns.

Welcome to the forum and Woodbridge! Not, not much of a move for sure, but change none-the-less.

I started shooting at a very young age and just stuck with it. I have several LEO's in the family, so that helped, but my folks were dead set against it. It made it a bit of a challenge, but I'm sure your family will support you in your choices.

Be safe and have fun!

I thought just about everyone carried around here. Between the Bloods, MS13, and the little clicks trying to come up by getting involved in drugs, weapons, and human trafficking, It makes sense too.

Welcome from Lake Ridge! Pretty much neighbors...

Have you discovered All Shooters Tactical yet? Great local gun shop near PW Pkwy and Smoketown.

No I haven't. I didn't even know of one around here. hahaha I was lucky enough to find a decent Pawn Shop to buy my shotgun last year.

I might go check this out this weekend. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation, that is my personal favorite of the .22 pocket guns. Unfortunately, either no one is selling locally or the price was too steep for my taste (seriously $400 for a cheap little .22 that didn't cost that much new!) Ugh.

I just want to clarify, I can't pop into a local FFL and purchase one right? Federal law prohibits them from selling to anyone under 21? And/or shippping to a FFL from say GunBroker?

Thanks in advance to any responses!

Oh and thanks for the welcomes everyone :) I think I'm going to like it here.

Ummmm, don't try that... That would be very bad juju. Patience young paduan!

While the Bobcat is fun, and has some specialized uses, my first choice for a .22 pistol would be a Mark III stainless. So much more fun to be had with that one. But there again, wait for the moon and stars to align, then go for it. :friends:

Well darnit.

As in Ruger MKIII Stainless?
Everyone says you can't go wrong with them. But holy o.O those babies are pricey! They also look weird, but I do respect that in terms of excellent .22 pistols the MKIII (whats the difference between that and the .22/45?) tops the list.
So strange looking though.

If I could buy a new cheap .22lr, the Phoenix HP22a gets decent reviews. It's like $145 new! Sigh. What about a GSG (or Chiappa) 1911 .22? Any experience with those? 1911's look so purpose-built and simple.

Just my 2ยข - don't skimp on the quality of your first purchase, be it pistol , rifle or shotgun. Then, at later time as your cash flow allows it, go ahead and try some of the cheaper stuff. It will become readily apparent at that time why certain models cost less. Do your research homework on determining what you want and what the best options (for that type of firearm) are, and in the meantime save like the dickens to be able to hand over the cash when you get there. You won't regret it.

You probably have a tough row to hoe finding someone who will sell to you in a private setting at this point in time. Most likely family or someone that knows you like family. Jake on here might be able to give you some tips from a younger point of view. Come to S&Gs, get to know folks - many will let you try what they have... there's nothing like hands on experience.

You're right.
After getting my new job and having enough to afford one I got excited to see what was out there.
I'll keep saving. I don't want to skimp on something that might save mine or someone else's life someday.
Jeez, if only I could apply that same sort of mentality to my automotive purchases. (don't even get me started)

Yeah I figured I would. But, hey it's worth a shot. At least I can say I tried, because you never know I might get lucky :bigthumb:

What's S&G?
I agree.
I actually shot a Sig 226 in 9mm and a Glock in .40S&W (not sure what model). I liked them both, but I was more accurate with the .40.
That reminds me. The only range I know of is The Range out in Fredericksburg and they won't let me shoot without someone 21+. Is that a typical thing for all ranges?
