Ok I am having an argument with my classmate from high-school. We were talking about the CO laws and he thought that whistles and call-boxes were effective. His advice was to run away if attacked. I asked him ok, so what do you do when you can't run way from an attacker (I have four children 7 years-14 months). His advice...which I think is insanity, is to tell the children to run away because there is no way I can protect them.
I say on that advice. First off a five year old, a three year old, and a 14 month old can't out run an adult. The seven year old is wiley, and might be able to out corner an adult, but would never leave his siblings in trouble. So if you tell them to run they will easily be caught and now you have a hostage situation and even worse decisions to make other than shoot/don't shoot. So I say on that advice.
It is my thought that if approached in a place where I was by myself with my four children, the proper thing to do is to put my children behind me. Tell the aggressor to leave us alone. If he breaks off the attack well and good (now time to call the cops). If not you draw and if he still advances stop the threat, put my children into a safe place and call the cops then.
What say you, oh wise ones of VGOF.
What would you do if you were responsible for the lives of 4 children 7 and under and were confronted with a threat (say on a park trail) with no other person in sight.

Your classmate displays the typical support for victimization. What you are illustratinf - a threat to your or your children's life - is exactly the reason to carry and practice. You stop or eliminate the threat, secure yourself and children, then notify the authorities.
But that's just my opinion.

If the whistles and call boxes are so effective, why do we still have violent crimes on campus?

That's a good strategy. Get the kids behind you fast. That way they're out of the line of fire if the dirtbag keeps coming.

Bluntly ask him, "So you're telling your mother that if someone comes after her to 'run away'? Even if she's old, and frail? How about your girlfriend/wife? Would you leave her behind if she couldn't keep up?"
When you make it PERSONAL, that generally shuts them up.
I find when they make the asinine statement to me "But, you're a big strong guy, and you're well trained."
"Yes, and what if my attacker is a BIGGER STRONGER GUY WHO IS BETTER TRAINED? Shall I exhibit your wussified lack of manhood, and beg for mercy?"
Bluntly, sheeple succumb. Free people die. Rather die than succumb.

Well he pulled his horns in and said I was being emotional....Well I am emotional about my kids, but that does not make me wrong! He says he has a CCW (lives in Kansas) as well, and I imagine he does. It really bothers me that a CCW holder, would think so highly of call boxes, whistles, and hiding. It bothers me that a CCW does not have the forthought to know that telling a three year old to run away from mommy is not a prudent choice.
He referenced this article. http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/a ... ment-37959 Which while it makes some good points it utterly forgets that the gunman can shoot at your fleeing child too! So unless they are fleeing to close cover and can get there fast having them run is insanity and asking for a dead kid.

That article can play the "wouda, coulda, shoulda what if" games all it wants, but if a robber is going to rob you at gunpoint, run away, and turn back around are you willing to put your life in their hands and HOPE they don't pop one in you? I'm not.
Despite all the scenarios about hitting innocent bystanders (the Aurora shooting brought out a lot of that), in any active shooter situation, NO ONE is saying "man, I'm glad they're the only one with a gun". Everyone wants someone else to shoot back and stop the event.

Ask him if he'll follow Feinstein' advice.
Dear Citizens;
After many studies and input from law enforcement from all over the world, we have come to the conclusion that there are bad people in the world that really just need help. They will assault you, rape you, and kill you using ANY means at their disposal, from strangulation, and axes, to knives and guns, even sporting rifles dressed up to look like military arms. DO NOT RESIST!
To ensure these people get the necessary help, we have decided the best course of action is to disarm the citizens of this country. Using a rifle or pistol in self defense often results in the death of these people in need. This violates their right, guaranteed in the Constitution of the United States, to a speedy trial by jury. Not to mention the necessary health care.
After due consideration, we have deemed that your best course of action is to beg for mercy. At least 1 in 10 victims may be spared their lives. In the case of rape, just lie back and thank the rapist afterward and he usually won’t strangle you afterwards. Quite possibly though, when the gunman realizes that nobody else is armed, he will lay down his weapons and turn himself in….that’s just human nature

My wife and daughter take the "Get behind me and cover your ears." approach.

I believe it is. It delves into how the brain makes snap judgments, and how the face conveys fleeting expressions that influence those decisions. Plus a lot more. http://www.gladwell.com/blink/index.html

If you listen the idiot of the year
you don't need guns, only a ball point pen and just wait until gunman needs to reload, then attack him.
I'm sad... Einstein was right... stupidity IS infinite...

Good heavens...I mean if you don't have anything else then I guess a pen is better than teeth and nails, but really? I'd rather a whole lot of other non-conventional weapons before I got to the ball point pen weapon.

Mamabear, Exactly where did your mental midget friend expect a three and 5 year old to run? "Away?" That is utter and total rubbish. Should they follow such a scenario and you fell in their defense, where would they be, how could they be reunited with remaining family? How will a 3 or 5 year old fleeing at your instruction know when they had reached a safe haven? Let alone a under-two toddler?
If you have not seen this web site, I recommend you take a peek. Guys, if there's a gun totin' mama, lady, girly, or other loved one of the female pursuasion in your family, send them here also if they've not visited:
