How do I dispose of mercury?

Post by KaosDad »

I just replaced two old style thermostats that have mercury switches in them. Any idea how I get rid of these properly?

Last time I had some of those, I took the mercury out and played with it. But, that's me. I'd hang on to them;mercury switches could come in handy later.

Most local landfills will accept them (and not by dumping them in a trash bag!) :hysterical:

just don't spill it in any government building or they will have to evacuate and have a hazmat team clean it up! :hysterical: I remember playing with it in high school science class.

Loudoun County has a drop-off program for items that contain mercury.

They work nice in motion alarms, so if anyone jars a door trying to get in. Then there's the malicious uses I will not mention.

Or you can make a nickle shine real good! XD

Mail them to the EPA.

In all seriousness, I would think some science geek would find it useful especially if it is not broken.
