Perhaps as a sign of a remaining challenge for the Republican Party, second-generation Latinos are moving more to the left than their parents, according to a wide-ranging study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center.
Among Hispanics, 71 percent who are second-generation are Democrats or lean that way, compared to 63 percent in the first generation. Among Asians, the ratio also edged higher, 52 to 49, although not enough to be considered statistically significant.


In the broader public, 49 percent reported that they are Democrats or lean that way.
The study lays bare some of the difficulties for the GOP following elections last November, when President Obama won with support from 80 percent of nonwhite and ethnic voters. The report tracks the socioeconomic progress and views of second-generation Americans, the bulk of them Latinos and Asians who were born in the U.S. after a 1965 immigration law opened U.S. borders to millions of non-Europeans.

When asked if they preferred a big government offering more services or a smaller government providing less, second-generation Hispanics were less likely than the first generation to support a big government, 71 percent to 83 percent. The same trend of declining support applied to second-generation Asians, 47 percent to 57 percent. Still, support among second-generation Americans for big government was higher than that of the general public, which stood at 39 percent.

Told ya immigrants overwhelmingly want a welfare state, some of you said I was wrong. The myth of the inborn Republican Latino is just a myth. Modern immigrants come to make their lives better...just at the expense of everyone else. They want free crap.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. Tell that guy out in the field picking strawberries for crap wages that he wants something for free. Because to me, he looks like he's working his ass off for whatever he can get. My father and both sets of my grandparents speak English as a second language. My grandfather worked, as a landscaper from the day he arrived in the United States with 16 dollars in his pocket till about a week before he died. If you think that everyone wants something for free I suggest you go out and make new friends, ask them what motivates them. I understand that might involve an original thought and therefore is asking too much but either way I figured I would suggest it. America, is the land of opportunity where hard work is rewarded with opportunity, any man working hard enough, wanting something bad enough can pursue it here. That is why people come to America. Instead of some communist regime where hard work is not rewarded or in some system that seeks to control them. Or some police state where academic pursuits are not encouraged. From that angle, 4 dollars a hour looks pretty damn good. Are there people who try to milk the system or who need ot be tossed out and or locked up like yesterday? Absolutely, I see them everywhere. I see them at the VA too! But do we generalize every veteran for it?Here let me run down a list of immigrants who came to this country because they wanted something for free.

Albert Einstien, Madeline Albright, Andrew Carnegie, Cary Grant, John Paul Jones

Daniel Inyoune and Roy Benavidez were the sons of immigrants who apparently wanted something for free too. They probably picked up that horrible work ethic from their folks. Nothing says selfish like the Medal of Honor. Some of you guys amaze me, I mean have you ever left Virginia in your life? Ever made any friends that weren't white protestants? Or is it just too convenient to generalize large groups of people however you're feeling? I understand if the closest you've ever come to a foreign language is a chinese food menu. But really, get out and do some exploring, it'll do you some good.

Immigrants pre-welfare state and post-welfare state/post 1965 Immigration Act are not the same bunch.

A large branch of my family tree came here in the height of the Great Depression, and they made it work.

Now we read of immigrants leaving because of "adverse economic conditions"...AKA they're just here for the money.

Ignorant statement my ass. Take away EMTALA, Medicaid, section 8, SNAP, etc and see how many are still here. None of that existed in the past, and those immigrants built; the new ones are by and large here to take.

Remember, it only takes two generations to become democrat because they're fed a constant diet of "FREE SH'T FROM THE GUV'MINT!"

I'm with Kreutz on this one. Cut out EVERYTHING! You're not an American Citizen, and until you become a NATURALIZED one? You get...nothing. Period. No education, no services, NOTHING!!!

My own peeps went frequently hungry in the cold water NYC tenements, they still made it work. From what I was told dinner for their entire family was normally one cabbage and one egg boiled and mashed together. Very filling for six I'm sure.

Then again, they really wanted to be here. They received no assistance from the government, since NY was not a welfare state at the time, nor was DC.

I maintain if you cut all benefits you will very quickly separate the immigrants here to take and the immigrants here to contribute very fast. And I maintain the latter are the minority based on my observations of Medicaid expenditures. And my own first hand ancedtoal evidence.

I've personally seem immigrants show up with the tags still on their luggage (as evident in the belongings record), demand, and get surgery. This happens rather frequently.

I've seen Latinos with a Medicaid card banging on pharmacy counters screaming "MEDICAID NO PAY" after NY state enacted a brutal 2 or 3 dollar co-pay on medications.

Screw 'em.

Interesting. Most Asians I know (being a halfie myself) are Libertarian or Republican. That said, you know what pushes away a lot of Asians? The self-righteous Christian hypocrisy. I know a lot of Asians that are very good people, but are not Christian.

Side note - pet peeve is not speaking English. My mother - pure Japanese - hates this. It drives her nuts that signs are in every language BUT English in some places in the US. She always makes the point she learned English and everyone should in the US. I tend to agree.

My father had a lot of Asians in Seminary with him. They all leaned leftward. In fact, my father was the only conservative there. He was also one of very few white folk. (I refer to that school as Jackson Sharpton University) On the other hand, my atheist and 100% Asian friends/landlords are quite conservative.
