Just finished building a hot wire foam cutter at home. Does anyone else here have some experience with foam cutting?

Anyway, my modest long rifles are shown -Spikes AR-15 and a Mossberg 500 w/Knoxx Stock.

I've been thinking about doing this with 2 gun cases I own - would you be willing to share how you built your hot wire cutter? I found a great thread on foam cutting on AR15.com, but unfortunately there wasn't precise information detailing exactly how the guy made his cutter.

Looks great! Were you using a different foam than what originally came in the case? I was under the impression that the Pelican cases came with foam that you could break out little squares to fit what you wanted in them. I know that's how they were with the equipment cases we had at my last job.

Also, does anyone know if the foam that is included breaks down over time? I recall reading somewhere that some do. If that's the case I would get different foam as well.

just a little caution - be careful about long term storage in foam lined anything. The foam can trap humidity and promote surface rust. Those cases, as I understand, are really intended for short term storage, like going to and from a range. But, this is what i understand, so YMMV.

I can attest to that. my father-in-law had a few long guns that he had kept in foam lined cases for at least 5 years without taking them out. He pulled them out about a month ago to find several surface rust spots on all of them.

the case I had to pick up for my SASS, the factory case no longer fit with a scope on it, had upper and lower foam and a center foam that was pre-grid perforated to be cut out to the shape desired. I still need to touch up my cuts some and elmer's the middle to the bottom to prevent shifting. I highly recommend throwing a desiccant packet in any case somewhere. You know those little packets of silica labeled "DO NOT EAT" found in many electronics packaging.
your cuts look much nicer than what I did so please share the info on building a cutter.
