I have a Taurus millenium pro pt145... ive put a few rounds through it and find that its everything I expected and more. Now, its time to clean and protect it. I am in the Army and have an Otis cleaning kit which I use for my M-16 at work. My question is, can I use the same CLP that I already have for my M-16 to clean my subcompact .45 handgun? If not , any suggestions on what I should use?

No reason you can't use CLP that I can think of. The stuff you use on your M16 is the same stuff available to us civilians for purchase. Enough people are using that stuff that if there was a problem we'd have known about it by now.

I thought maybe he wanted us to tell him NOT to use CLP. I'll tell him almost anything he wants to hear though.

lol, no its not that, I just wanted to hear a few opinions so im sure im not going to melt the polymer on the gun or anything of that nature... cant afford to go out and buy a new one!!!

You'll certainly get an opinion from Gary. Just be careful what you wish for though...

Others will chime in as they show up, check back on this post throughout the next few days. We have a lot of people that are in and out of here at various times of the day. As far as damaging the polymer, what is the pistolgrip, forearms, and buttstock of your M16 made of? I think you'll see others saying pretty much what I've already said. If you are that concerned about the polymer parts of the pistol, use water on it and CLP on the slide/barrel/etc. Water won't hurt it if you dry it out good.

Yup, water wont hurt it at all. I used to take my M-16 in a hot shower with me after a day at the range - seriously.

I used to take my M16 with me in a cold shower at the range.

lol, well, its good to know you guys know what youre talking about.. and good point about the M-16 parts... haha, i feel pretty dumb now. im just being over cautious I guess... I just love my new peice and want it to stay ship shape.

Hey, dont sweat it. This is a great place and we rib each other all the time. You'll find a wide variety of knowledge and people more than willing to help you out. One caveat I can think of is if you have night sights,,, some manafacturers have specific guidlines as to what products should be used around their sights..

Hot water on a dirty m16=great stuff! Just be sure to dry it thoroughly!
We'd sneak into the laundry room to use the sinks when the DS weren't looking.
Shaving cream seems to help a little too. I'm sure how, but it seemed to help pick up a bit more dirt. This is not scientfically tested so it's pure speculation.

As for CLP on polymer; are you nuts?! Have you seen what it does to an M16 pistol grip! It melts in like 10 seconds flat! Obviously, I'm joking. CLP works for a handgun just as well as a long rifle. Save your money and use whatcha got!

hahaha.. Well, ive had people tell me that it wasnt safe and to use break-free or hoppes only.

I always used it on my plastic parts. I can't imagine the polymers in handguns are that chemically different.
