if you are tired of people asking for $700-$1000 for them.. Still a bit over market, but honestly better than I've seen elsewhere, including here.

Not knowledgeable about AR's, is it the upper or the lower you need to go through an FFL for?

I think that it is the lower that is tracked but I am not sure

The stripped lower is the firearm.

What Gene said. The Stripped lower is the only part with a serial number (outside of whatever the manufacturer puts on them just for internal QC and tracking). It's the only piece that requires FFL transfer.

What does "stripped" mean? And what would a corresponding upper run me? thanks!

stripped = no parts of any kind installed in the lower.
i.e just the forging.

You'd need to add a lower parts kit, buffer & spring, receiver extension and a stock to make it a full lower. Then you'd need the upper....

Kreutz, it's a fun build brotha! Don't let it intimidate you! Seriously! Go to Brownells AR section, and you'll see a plethora of options for building your lower!
It's a cornucopia waiting! You can customize your trigger, buffer, springs, safety, etc. Make it your very own!

Man I hate to write this as I'm going to be wrong and people will be able to rub my nose in it. Prices are going to dump in the summer. There I wrote it. You know what the difference between a bubble and a good investment? Future demand. Biden assembled a super great friends gun control league. What happened? The obamasia put out 24 executive actions and from what I am told they are actions not orders. From reading them they are all toothless. Yes Frankenstein put out a bill to outlaw AR, AK, and all kinds of stuff. How many stood with her and want to turn this to a law? I think this will stir up some more talk to keep people away from the economy, unemployment, Europe, North Africa, Iran, North Korea, China's military and trade, and all kinds of other things.
This should all quietly blow away. Many Dems and progressive leaning Reps will go back and tell there people they need to be elected back in to finish the job. Than all the hoarders, investors, and people filled with fear will realize they need to get something back for all the aluminum in there closet.
What proof do you have? Well none but hasn't it bugged you that nobody has lowers? Even 80% lowers? Sure some here and there. You can be put on a list that ranges from 8 weeks to 8 months. Why? Well they will tell you it's because they don't know what will be illegal. Really? If I made Vodka I would churn and burn my production line till my workers fell asleep on the line. I'd make as much money as I could before all my specialty tools became scrap metal.
But what if you saw a bubble about to pop? What if you had no idea when the political stuff would burn out. When people would lose the fear of not being able to make that purchase. I think I'd ramp down production. Charge a bit more and put people on a waiting list. Especially if I could get them to prepay.
Now in the event I am wrong, I'd like to reserve some time now on someones mill or CNC machine so I can turn a chunk of aluminum into a tool.

but please don't
hope it will blow away without action. We all need to be contacting our elected rep's and letting them know where we stand and that we won't stand for any bans.

Eh, I have no interest in owning one, wanted to buy a couple of them and sell them while prices are high. I'll look into the cost of parts for what makes them whole and the time involved. If the margin looks good enough I'll order some.

On two points:
I concur with Purdune, it's getting more, and more likely that people will continue to call, write, and e-mail the representation we have (spits when thinks of Lil-Timmy Boy), and they will realize "If I side with a lame duck president with a far left wing agenda, I will NEVER get re-elected!"
HOWEVER, I would caution NOT to "hold off" if you really need something. As one who went thru this crap in 1994, I regretted not getting more high cap mags, and a few other items. Hence why when 2004 came about, I started saving till the prices came down, bought what I wanted, and now? I'm juuuusssttt fine!
Now, Kreutz, I caution you about doing this as a fast turn investment. Because we have folks on the marketplace that are sitting on overpriced guns, lowering the prices every so often. People have a "cut-off" in their minds, at some point, they're just gonna say "Nope! Not worth it!".
So if you're going to do that? Do not go TOO high.
I hope Purdune is correct, and in a couple years I'm grabbing AR's for pennies on the dollar, but I have NO "Hope for Change" in my heart with the long legged liar in chief controlling things.

Purdune, I don't disagree with you. Prices will stabilize. I more posted this for the people who don't want to wait, did want one now, and felt $300 was reasonable. I have mine and I'm all set. However being as I've seen some sell for 500-800, I felt sharing the $300 one in stock (in stock is the hard part), was in everyone's best interest. I'd rather see my VGF brothers and sisters get them at a somewhat reasonable price over others.

Speculation drives prices up, whether it was the .com stock market bubble, the real estate bubble, Facebook right now or ARs and high capacity magazines right now. Folks are jumping in right now trying to make a quick buck. You can even see some people seizing the opportunity on some threads in this forum. $300 is roughly double what they could be found for 2 months ago. Prices will rise for the next few months as availability disappears. If the ban happens, it is a good investment. If the ban doesn't happen, prices will plummet. It could be a game of "Hot Potato" whoever is holding it last loses. You can jump in and play right now if you want, I will sit on the sidelines of this economic lesson...

Another option is Ares Armor has 80% lowers for around $100. The cool thing is they don't need to go through a FFL since its not considered a firearm at that time.
They need a little work from a machine shop but its supposed to be easy.
The catch is you can never sell it since it doesn't have a serial number.

I concur. When I was younger and more foolish in 1994, I loaded up on a crap-ton of overpriced AK mags. I made a nice profit for a while and then everyone realized that there were millions still out there and they were all grandfathered. Prices dropped and I ended up dumping most of them for an overall loss. In 20/20 hindsight, I should have held on to them until 2013 but you never know.
The more I read about the situation on The Hill, I like our chances but we can't take anything for granted and have to keep the pressure up. Secondly, another horrific massacre like Newtown anytime soon could push many of our lukewarm "allies" over the edge.

It won't even take a massacre to push anyone on the fence over. Every shooting is being reported in the media now to provide as many opportunities, whether it's a firefighter getting shot, bus driver getting shot and a boy getting kidnapped to an underground bunker, school shooting, college shooting, or whatever.
What's interesting about the increased number of stories about shootings being reported in the media, none of them talk about the 40+ people that have been killed in Chicago just in January. hhhmmm......

Just to clarify,
Yes call and write to your representatives from the Fed all the way down to your city/county. I don't want to be known as part of a silent majority. I think over confidence was part of the reason people didn't come out of the woodwork to vote for Romney. I too thought that was a done deal though the last week or two of polls showing the obamasia tanking got me worried.
Next I'm a capitalist pig. I don't like price gouging but I certainly don't have a problem with someone selling something for going rates or just below. I was merely expressing my views on the "futures market".
Lastly I'd really like to have an AR-10 as opposed to the AR-15 and am looking for an 80%. I'm a bit of a universal man and more want to be able to look at the guy with the $3,000 rifle with all the cool add ons and say "yeah but I built mine". I just need to find someone with a mill and what type of beer they like!

How much machining is necessary to make this operational? Please dont say 20%
Does just need a little sanding and a lower parts kit?
