We have a lot of work to do to get our message out!

I was talking with my mom yesterday and a couple of things she said made me stop and think about the information that is being disseminated by the media.
Mom is in her 70’s and has never really been either pro or anti-gun. When I was a kid my father had a shotgun and a pistol and no one thought twice about it. But yesterday the topic got on gun control and she made the following statements:
- You do not need an assault rifle to go hunting.
- There are no background checks at gun shows.
Now my mother can be somewhat opinionated, and believes most of what she sees on TV or reads in the paper (yes she still reads the newspaper), but we went through each point and I refuted them to the best of my ability. But it did make me stop and realize that we have a lot of work to do to make sure correct information is provided to the general public.
We can, and should, talk to our family and friends to make sure they understand in the issues. But I would also like to see some public service announcements/ads by the NRA debunking the garbage the media is putting out. Putting an NRA ad in American Rifleman, Guns and Ammo or other “gun” magazines does not help. Let’s put the ads on CBS/ABC/NBC, in the Washington Post/New York Times/Los Angeles Times, and People Magazine (my wife’s favorite magazine), and any other media that targets the general public. Now there may be some (NBC, New York Times, and others) that may not want to carry an ad from the NRA, but I would be willing to bet the money would win out over any “moral character”
they may have.
What do you think? Any other ideas how to get our message out?
