Hello everyone!

I'm Glenn Littrell and I am an addict. I love firearms.

My wife is getting back into the USAF and we are going to be stationed at Langley AFB in Hampton. I really enjoy shooting and would like to learn about my new area, where to go for guns, where to shoot and meet some great people to shoot with. This is my first time living on the East coast, been in TX most of my life minus a 3 year stint in Germany, so I expect a little culture shock. Primarily I hear you guys do BBQ wrong...something about pork. I guess I can learn to accept that LOL. I do have relatives in SC, so I experienced good pork BBQ there when I went to family reunions. All joking aside, I am excited to meet some people, do some shooting and work on some guns. My armory has currently diminished to three firearms, but that will change. I'm currently rocking a Walther PPQ9mm, Mossber Mav 88 12 gauge with ATI goodies and a DPMS RFA3-REC with CMC trigger, Makko grips and a Nikon P223 optics. I look forward to meeting you guys and I will update when I find out where I will be living exactly.

Welcome to the area. I drive by LAFB every day. For good BBQ, go to "County Grill" They have a great pork BBQ, BBQ chicken, shrimp (THE BEST! BBQ grilled shrimp stuffed with gouda and wrapped in bacon) and even brisket for you Texas folks
Really, it's all great. May not be what you are used to, but trust me, it'll do
Once you start liking REAL BBQ ( ) there are plenty of places (Beach Bully BBQ and the like)

For ranges, Lafayette Gun Club ( http://lafayettegunclub.org ) is the go-to private club in the area. For "public" type indoor ranges there is Superior Gun and Pawn in Hampton ( http://www.superiorpawn.com ) and The Marksman in Newport News ( http://www.the-marksman.com ) Both offer memberships. The Marksman is a bit better, but Superior will do in a pinch.

For gun shops, there are several. The Armory in VA Beach ( http://www.the-armory.com ) is pretty nice. Decent selection, a ton of Magpul gear and OK prices. Superior is usually on the high side. Bob's guns in Norfolk ( http://www.bobsgunshop.com ) has a killer selection of just about everything, but prices can be a little on the high side. For FFL transfers I usually use The Marksman. A little further away, there is Six River Armory in Hayes ( http://www.sixriversarmory.com Not really any further than VA Beach/Norfolk, but there is a small toll) and Green Top in Richmond.

For IDPA/Practical shooting events, check out Norfolk County Rifle Range and some smaller events at Lafayette.

For a larger outdoor range, there is C2 in VA Beach (It'll be a drive though, it's pretty far out there).

Another nice outdoor only range is Airfield Shooting Club (private club) ( http://www.airfieldshootingclub.org ) it's pretty quiet, but it's a drive from the Hampton area. There are also a bunch of Hunt Clubs around the area as well.

Welcom to the forum. I live in Hampton near Langley and pretty much agree with all chrismartin wrote. One thing he left out was the Range at Chickahominy wildlife management area. It's set up for zeroing rifles and shotguns. It's free if you have a hunting or fishing license, otherwise you have to pay a daily use fee of around $4.

There is more regional variation in 'Q than you'll believe.

Be sure to make a pilgrimage to Pierces Pit Bbq in Williamsburg, it's world class. Yeah, as a Texan you'll think it's the wrong critter, but you guys invented Lone Star Beer, too....*shudder*

Good info!

I may indeed PM anyone that's in the area for some info and to meet some like minded people. I can't wait to experience the area since I love shooting and fishing. I think I'll need to gear up on tackle since all I have is a medium action pole and I know there are some big fish in the waters around there.

Well, I don't know much in that area, so I can't speak to that.

I can speak to the BBQ.. I don't know what the other Virginians do, but I do it right. I'll cook anything that I can fit in my smoker. Pork (Shoulder, Butt, Ribs), Beef (Round, Brisket, etc), and I make a killer homemade BBQ sauce (a close friend from Lubbock, TX has told me it's the best sauce he's ever had).

Sometime this summer, I'll take care of you and show you how we do it.

Holy cow you guys are friendly, I really appreciate that. Looks like we are going to be moving around the April/May timeframe if everything goes as planned. I am thinking I will be at a point where I can venture out around May. I really look forward to meeting some of you guys!

Welcome to Virginia. I'm sure you'll love it here as we are just as gun.and barbeque minded as you Texans. Though it may be abit different here i believe you will like it. You should definitely chack out Richmond
We have lots of bbq and the world's largest indoor shooting range complete with a tactical range reserved for members leo and military
It is called colonial shooting academy. You should check it out

So I have some more info as to where we will probably be living, no solid date yet. We are going to be focusing on finding a rental house in Poquoson, Gloucester Point or Williamsburg. Any other suggestions for that general vicinity? I will be attending the community college there to get basics out of the way (again, damned ITT Tech) and start a 4-year program.

There's some good BBQ joints, but most are different than your use to in Texas. This is pulled pork with vinegar based sauce territory. It's all good though.

VGOF has had meetup in the past, but I haven't heard of any plans for the spring yet. Usually shooting, eating, and discussion. You might be able to provide some insight on this thread: http://vagunforum.net/general-discussio ... 15914.html

When you do get here go on to the dgif website. Lots of good information about the public and free firing ranges. The wma's have some excellent siting in ranges however most are only available half the year. There is a terrific wma's just north of Hampton. The chickahominy is near Williamsburg. Virginia is not only for lovers but also gun owners.
