Ladies and gents this is an issue near and dear to my heart as I have disabled family members. I love them, and I do not want the UN looking after their interests I want family to do so. Nothing from the UN is ever good. Section 7 of this treaty has language that could (and likely would) be used to remove a families right to home school their special needs child, and the language is ambiguous enough that just about anything from mild dysgraphia to the most major of learning disabilities could be called "special needs". Additionally we don't need the UN making our laws. In our country we are sovereign. We should not cede any more bits of our sovereignty to another nation. While I'm not a fan of UN treaties because I don't need a one world government, I'll be surprised if this doesn't go through. Looks like there is bipartisan support for it.

Senator John Kerry (D-MA), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has said that current U.S. laws protecting the disabled are the "gold standard" for such initiatives worldwide. He said that the treaty would "take that gold standard and extend it to countries that have never heard of disability rights."

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the CRPD in July by a vote of 13-6, with both Democrats and Republicans supporting U.S. ascension to the treaty. In addition to every major disability and veteran's organization, the treaty is also supported by the United States Chamber of Commerce and key leaders in America's historic bipartisan disability rights movement, including Senator Bob Dole and President George H.W. Bush.

Republican Senator John McCain said on Tuesday that "regardless of where in the world a disabled person strives to live a normal, independent life, where basic rights and accessibilities are available. Disability rights and protections have always been a bipartisan issue, and ratifying this treaty should be no different.""

I remember about 10 years ago there was a push for something called "outcome based education Goals 2000" it contained in it's text the possiblity that parents could be stripped of their right to homeschool their children. There was wide bipartisan support, until the homeschooling community fried the circuit board of the capital with phone calls. It is never too late until they vote on it.

It is quite simple. Do you want the UN to tell us how to treat our disabled people. Do we want places like Somalia and Indonesia interpreting the treaty and how we treat our families with disabled people in it. It is a poison pill. Call your senator.


Senator John Kerry particularly is an idiot....signing the treaty only puts us on the hook for it, it does not put any other nation on the hook. He is not as stupid as he looks though, I bet he knows that, and is spinning to keep us from noticing another part of our sovereignty slipping out the door.

If you're kids are meeting the accredited standards required for education, you SHOULD be able to educate them any way you wish... PERIOD!

Fortunately I was wrong. This measure was 6 votes short of passing.
