I've had a mud wasp nest back behind my shed for at least 6 months. I found it when I tried to mow up all the vines that grow back there. one of them buggars stung my finger a good one. Anyways I've been wanting to mow that area but didn't know how to get rid of the wasps. After thanksgiving my wife gave me the grease leftover from the turkey and told me to get rid of it. I dumped it on the mud wasps nest and ran like crazy.

I wasn't sure if that would work cause a little while later I checked the nest and they were swarming all around it. Anyways the next morning I checked the nest and it was all dug up. Some critter must have smelled the grease and went after the wasp nest. I only found one wasp still alive wiggling on the ground but found all kinds of honey comb pieces all over the ground. The grease didn't get the job done directly but there is no more wasp nest to worry about.

I just thought someone else might like to know how to get rid of a mud wasp nest.

I shot a wasp nest with a paintball gun one time, most have shot a 150 paintballs. Worked pretty well, didn't get stung and they left the nest.

Yep, yellow jackets, that's what I thought you were talking about. They're some nasty characters. Mud wasps, southern: mud daubers, are solid black and skinny. They build tubelike mud structures under eaves, etc. As far as I know, mud daubers don't sting.

On the mud daubers, I have read that they can sting, but it must take some severe provocation.
On the yellow jackets...there are a few animals that will dig up their nests, including skunks. IIRC hornets are related.

In 1970 I laughed at my brother-in-law running across the yard while beating on his ankles as he was attacked by the little buggers. 2010 and I found myself running down a driveway and up the street while beating them off my ankles. It took me a couple days to, again, find the image amusing.
For the earlier incident, I poured gasoline in the hole after dark The latter incident was remedied with Sevin dust poured in the hole by neighbors.

You really haven't lived until you run a bush hog over a Yellow Jacket Nest...Had to leave the "Running Tractor" in the field for 3 hrs. 'til dark before I could retrive it ! It's funny now , but not then.
