So, is this a smart technique or a dumb as hell method for holstering a striker-fired pistol?

Yep, that's a self-neutering holster. Just wait until the leather becomes deformed from heat, moisture and wear and it will catch the trigger / safety one day. Then presto, he'll be the nutless wonder.

It's a dumb as hell method that makes a mockery of keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot - one of the main safety rules. Smart holstering is slow holstering, slow enough to preclude a trigger press and discharge by either your finger or something else such as clothing. Do this Babineaux Method of holstering in competition and you may well get disqualified from the match.

If your holster is touching the trigger at any point that is a big issue, The holster shouldn't touch the trigger, ever. And if your holster doesn't touch the trigger you shouldn't have to either. What is wrong with these people?

I'm still not sure how this doesn't violate the "keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target" rule. Looks like the holster is made from flimsy material that could get caught in the trigger guard when reholstering.
If this truly is catching on, I'm wondering with whom?

I don't doubt it. When I read the article, the comment section contained nearly 90 comment, not one of which approved of the silly idea.
