Anyone here own or shoot a SIG 556R? I'm starting to get the "bug". I'm going to the gunshow next weekend at the Show Place to just look. Really. Just look.

Any good or bad experiences with them?

I've handled a few of the Sig 556 rifles and I'm not impressed. Heavy, yet cheap feeling. The 556R had a problem early on with certain AK mags and not taking steel-cased ammo. I *think* they've fixed it but there are better guns out there.

Now if you want one just to have one, go for it. But as a serious use rifle, I'd pass.

I've shot them and wasn't impressed. Very front heavy and didn't pocket well. It's probably mostly due to me being so used to ARs though.

Well, I got it Saturday.

Front heavy? Yeah, sort of like my M1 Garand (synthetic stock with Amega Ranges scout scope mount and LER scope on it) so it really doesn't feel that awkward to me.

Its sort of the cross between the AK47 and the AR15. Push pins to separate the upper and lower receiver halves apart, full length rail on top of the receiver, thumb safety (different location and doesn't turn a full 90 degrees but still similar), etc.

The lower receiver has a steel insert of front in the mag well that should keep the magazines from wearing on the aluminum lower receiver. The hammer spring is a hellacious thing compared to the AR15 spring.

I got the SIG sights for it, too. Sort of an AK looking front sight with an HK looking diopter rear sight. The rear sight seems to work better for me (helps my old eyes focus on the front sight post - maybe because the holes are smaller that the AR15 rear sights).

It tears down different than the AR. It has a bolt/carrier like an AK and the gas system is up front over the barrel (spring and piston). The gas system (tube, adjustment knob, spring, and piston) is easy to remove and clean.

Hopefully I'll get to the range this weekend to shoot it.

Range report, please. I'd like to read your thoughts on how it performs.
