AR Pistol

Hello everyone,

I have a couple of stripped lower receivers and thinking about starting another build. This time, I want to build an AR Pistol. I figured I would build it and if I get sick of it, I can always send in my forms and SBR it. Having just moved back to VA, I was wondering if there are any state laws I should worry about? Are AR pistols OK to build from a stripped lower in VA?

Thanks in advance.

You should not run into any trouble with AR pistols in Virginia. :pistol:

OH! But remember, on any pistol: Never put a vertical foregrip on the front handguards. That's a big federal no-no.

I am very aware of NFA rules, that is one thing I DO NOT mess with. I like my freedom too much.
Thank you for looking out :bigthumb:

So, I'm a little lost on this, so I have a few questions.

1) When you say AR pistol its basically an AR designed to shoot a pistol round?

2) Other than being a pistol round, what other restrictions are there such as barrel length etc?

3) Any information about where to get the necessary parts to build one? Any specialized parts?

I'm still young and learning, so I hope you all can educate me on this.

See the answers below. Let me know if you have more questions.

AR pistol is essentially an AR-15 with a short barrel and no stock. The pistol round has nothing to do with it.

2) Other than being a pistol round, what other restrictions are there such as barrel length etc?
Anything below a 16" barrel requires you to either NOT put a stock on it (turning it into a "pistol"), or to fill out an ATF Form 1 to registered it as a Short Barrel Rifle.

3) Any information about where to get the necessary parts to build one? Any specialized parts?
You use the exact same parts as you would a regular (rifle) AR-15 except you would purchase a shorter barrel or upper(in my case a 7.5" barrel) and a pistol buffer tube.

There is a lot more info so feel free to ask.
