I refuse to hunt through surplus stores only to come up with old, dented, and/or rusted surplus ammo cans. Ammo cans can range from $15-40 online and vary between plastic cans and more rusted surplus metal cans. I used to keep my ammo with my other gun supplies in a small backpack, but started using that backpack as a range bag and would have to take the ammo out if I went to a place where I had to shoot their ammo. This got annoying real quick.

For less than $6 I was able to get one gallon (and one pint) of ice cream from Walmart in a plastic tub. The tub measures approx. 9" long x 7" wide x 5.5" deep. While not as big as other ammo cans, the price is definitely right and it comes full of ice cream (chocolate, fudge swirl, strawberry swirl, or neapolitan)! The plastic isn't completely opaque so you can still see what's in the tub for easy identification or you can use a marker to label it. It has a snap on lid, handle, and is stackable. It doesn't have a rubber gasket like a military can does, but I don't live in a flood zone and keep it off the ground. I would imagine the snap on lid would provide some protection in melted ice cream getting outside the container, but this is just a guess and I haven't done any tests with liquids entering or leaving the container. The pictured ammo weighs 10 pounds and the handle and plastic tub do just fine with the weight.

Plano's stacking field boxes get pretty good reviews most places I see them online. I'm considering getting one or two and will report my experience with them should I get 'em.

My ammo can currently consists of a cookie jar with spare change and dollars in it for when I get back to the states and can shoot my guns lol. I do happen to have the actual green ammo cans back home from ages ago when a coast guard station had to DRMO stuff and I was able to pick it up instead of them throwing it out.

I keep my ammo out of the boxes in gladware or any of those other plastic containers. I can't stand having all those boxes being everywhere while I shoot.

So. This might be a dumb question. I currently just keep everything in the safe. Should i be storing in something more air tight?

+1 for Plano. Suggest asking for a Plano field box for Xmas. $15-20 bucks and they work great. Mine has a removable tray on top for storing pens, eyes, ears, snap caps, small holsters, etc. Everything you need for the range or the field in one tough little box.

Different strokes for different folks. If the system you have works for you, roll with it.

I keep my ammo stored in my gun cabinet. Some stacked on a top shelf, with the larger, heavier stuff stacked to one side on the bottom. I use a plastic tool box when I'm carrying multiple boxes of ammo to the range. It will hold a dozen or so of the typical 50-round boxes of handgun ammo. It also has a tray that fits over top to hold small stuff like pocket knife, multi-tool, screwdriver, tiny flashlight, silicone wipes, small shoot-n-c sticky targets, etc.

I think the military was on to something when they developed the ammo can. Just about the right size/weight. Stack nicely. Air/water tight. Reasonably priced on the surplus market.

Most of the cans I've bought have been in good shape, but I only buy grade I or II.

So. This might be a dumb question. I currently just keep everything in the safe. Should i be storing in something more air tight?

Most ammo is reasonably air tight as-is with regard to powder/primer. If you are worried about surface corrosion.... then I wouldn't store guns in that environment either.

That's what I thought. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something.

I keep mine in an old locking file box, I know I know but I have my niece to worry about.

I've used just about everything possible for carrying ammo from 5 gallon buckets with a bar stool seat hinged to make a Dove Hunting Stool to using Military Boxes. My favorite is a 2-6 pack Igloo Hinged top Cooler. It will hold enough ammo for a full day of shooting. It is pretty heavy when full , but works great when shooting on private land and don't have to carry it far. I picked up a nice plastic tool box with a tray at a yard sale this summer for $2. that is great for taking to the Range.

ohh where? I haven't see any here in Va Beach.. thou I haven't really looked.

I've been using the plastic containers the Chinese soup comes in. clean them up and dry them out, gtg .. the plastic is pretty though and the seal well. normally cut the box info out and put in there so I know whats what..

+1 too for Plano field box .. I have one, works well. haven't had a chance to pick up other. to bad the lid doesn't come off like the USM ammo cans..
Also MTM makes some nice plastic cans, stackable and there more square then the plano.

Seen them in multiple locations in northwestern part of state, they usually only have 1 or 2 on the shelf with hunting or muzzleloading gear. Made by flambeau.

AMMO cans!!! I tried to tell my wife it wasn't tuna...damn!

Ooooh those.. I got one of them.. I thought you meant the metal USM cans
Tho I never really used It for an ammo can.. its now serving duty in my car's trunk, holds tools, compressor etc...

Here's a pic of my makeshift setup.. going to the range.

2 large Chinese soup containers in one of the Plano field boxes.
each container will hold about 300-325 rounds of 9mm and 325-350 of .380/9mm makarov (I don have any other calibers to test atm) .. but no more pesky boxes..
I cut the box top and side off and tape them inside the containers so I know which is which.
Not the most effect use of space in the field box.. probably should get square'r containers, but they'll do for now.

I keep my ammo stored in Sterilite storage drawers. They stack well and have a lot of room. When its time to go to the field, what I need goes in the range bag.
