TAMPA, Fla. - Delegates to the Republican National Convention on Tuesday will approve the most pro-gun platform ever, staking out support for national concealed carry reciprocity and opposing domestic restrictions on ammunition and United Nations interference in gun sales.

"It's probably the most supportive and detailed on Second Amendment issues ever," said a gun-rights advocate who attended the GOP platform committee meetings last week.

Besides giving the National Rifle Association and other Second Amendment groups victories on their issues, the platform is also a slap at several Obama initiatives, including the Fast & Furious scandal, his administration's consideration of a ban on high-capacity bullet magazines and talk of reviving the assault weapons ban and negotiations in the United Nations over a treaty to regulate small arms sales.

My only concern is with the national concealed carry reciprocity. As long as they don't make it too cumbersome to get the permit we're good to go. From what I gather VA has a pretty easy and straightforward process, but if they make it more like some other states where you have to jump through more hoops then that will just discourage people from getting their permit.

The Feds shouldn't be setting standards or requirements, just making sure other states recognize each others paperwork.

Like a driver's license. Bingo.

The reciprocity thing would be good for truck drivers who wish to carry aboard their trucks. (Like me, in a couple of months)

As to the Feds not setting standards or requirements, well, naturally, they shouldn't. Unfortunately, our Federal Government has a proven track record of overstepping their bounds.

Really, though, the reciprocity deal is rather redundant; the 2nd Amendment already provides for this. The Federal Government, however, has been ridiculously lax in enforcing it amongst the states, and with minimal outcry amongst the citizenry.

And people say gun rights are dwindling by the day........that said don't expect NFA to be gone anytime soon or anything.

I wouldn't be worried about process as much as the states coordinating the standards and requirements as much as possible. If in VA you are required to meet expectations A, B, C, MD may expect you to meet something similar to A and B not require C but have expectation D too. NY may have expectation A through G. So you my believe you are complying with the law and are in fact in compliance with the wrong laws. I realize that training would help with the compliance, but you would need to have a 50 state plus territories compliance guide that would have to be updated several times a year to deal with the changes.

One final thought, the NYPD will believe that they can shoot you for thinking you might have a gun, that policy is already in place...

If a national reciprocity conceal weapon permit law were set into play, the requirements will flex and flow across the states to come to common ground, just like with drivers' licenses.

I guess the concern is that the most stringent standards would become the minimum ones to satisfy the most restrictive states. Certainly, the anti-gun lobby could be expected tp attempt to make that happen to salvage as much as possible of ther agenda.

So, do we need to worry that we might see a day what California's requirement that you can't get a carry permit unles you can sing six verses of cum-by-yah likee you really MEAN it will be imposed on us Virginians. Scary.

That common ground idea is actually scary.. Personally I think the fed needs to stay out of the concealed carry issue,, Once they get involved its only a matter of time before its all screwed up. States are supposed to act independently of the Federal Government ,

100% correct.

However, the Federal Government is supposed make sure that the States act within the bounds of the Constitution. (I base this assertion on the Constitution being a Federal document) The Fed, of course, is failing at this; in fact, they seem to encourage the opposite.

And, of course, the voting public is also failing to hold our representatives accountable.

We do need to get off our asses ,,,just look at what's happened from our being lazy and apathetic...Obama and a whole lot of liberal crap that should never have seen the light of day.
