Because it is irritating to have someone have a bully pulpit, and not know a damned thing about the subject to which he speaks.

If asked, I would have said that to be an assault rifle, a rifle must be fully automatic or select-fire between fully and semi automatic.
The recent babbling about “assault weapons” by various national politicians made me wonder just what the “official” definition of an assault weapon might be. An idle mind being the devil’s workshop, I got on the internet and went to searching. Best answer I could come up with after an admittedly cursory research effort is that it depends on who you ask. It would seem that the term is a term of art with no universally accepted precise definition. That happens sometimes when a lot of people get passionately involved in an issue they don’t know a damn thing about.
Merriam-Webster, at www.m-w.com defines an assault rifle as “any of various automatic or semiautomatic rifles with large capacity magazines designed for military use “.
According to Wikipedia, “An assault rifle is a fully automatic rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine.[1]” (Certainly the definition I would have given)
Dictionary.com defines “assault rifle as: “1. a military rifle capable of both automatic and semiautomatic fire, utilizing an intermediate-power cartridge.” Or “2. a nonmilitary weapon modeled on the military assault rifle, usually modified to allow only semiautomatic fire.
Someone else once said that an assault weapon was any one that the anti-gun crowd wants to demonize. Another wag has observed that it is any gun that is black and scarey. (Can you imagine what would happen if you said that about PEOPLE?)

So it would seem that at minimum all we gun-fixated crazies should be very careful to assure that our ugly rifles either are not fully automated or painted some decidedly unblack color. I suggest pink.

Ots so sad indeed. They presume an AK is machine gun and dont even know that it's one of the most popular medium to big game hunting rounds. You certanily cant teach ignorance.

Yes, a President, being the Commander in Chief of our Military, should have a much better knowledge of weapons. But, then, I believe that the Commander in Chief should have some experience in our Military to begin with, even if it's only four years spent as a private.

They think that everything that holds or fires more than one round per minute is an assault weapon. That way when they ban one, they ban them all.

He doesn't even know the correct way to pronounce "Hospital Corpsman", why would we expect him to know jack about an "assault weapon". Maybe if we called it a "gat" or a "chopper" he'd understand.

Don't forget the 57 States he says we have,or,(here we are in Aisa) when hes in Hawaii. Born and raised there,but thinks its in Asia.

Although you may not agree with it or like it, VA law actually has legal definition for an assault firearm:

"Assault firearm" means any semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol which expels single or multiple projectiles by action of an explosion of a combustible material and is equipped at the time of the offense with a magazine which will hold more than 20 rounds of ammunition or designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock.
