Legitimate internet site to get CHP permit

Hi I am a new member from Mecklenburg Va... WE are getting ready to apply for our CHP as we will be traveling in our RV and doing a lot of camping .. We are going to have security put on our RV door.. But we have been advised from many of our friends that we should have some protection just in case we need it... I grew up in the Mountains of WVa and we all had fire arms we didn't have to have a permit.. One of the first things we learned was how to shoot a gun safely... My husband was in the Air Force , So I know he has had the required training he needs to get his permit.. As for me my dad taught me and I do know how to operate guns... My question is where do we go on line to get our permits... We checked out some places and they wanted money to get our permits.. I dont' think they were legitimate. We would like to have the internet site that is the right one... Thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Anywhere you go, whether online or in person, is going to want money for the training. Getting the training is all you can do online. I am not sure where online you can get the training though, someone should be along with that information.
To apply for you permit you must take all required paperwork to the Clerk of the Court for the county you reside in. There are 2 links under "RESOURCES" on the left of this page, one is "Virginia CHP Info" and takes you to another discussion in this forum where you will find CHP info; the other link is "Virginia State Police" it will take you to the VSP CHP information site. The application is available from the VSP web site. The fingerprinting requirement varies from county to county so you may want to call your Clerk to see whether it is required for you. Costs can also vary by county- $15.00 to $50.00.

Personally, I hate taking classes online.
I know it works for some people though.
However, I just much prefer the classroom approach.

Don't forget to keep about a shotgun in the RV.
Well, I guess it couldn't hurt atleast.

Thank you for your replies... I am going to a class this Sunday to get my CHP ... I will feel safer RVing ... I was taught to always keep our guns locked up and hide the key...I have read almost each state have different rules... Some of the rules sure don't sound right to my teaching , I am going to keep the book of rules of each state beside of me so I can read the rules before I drive into it... God Bless America..
