Commerce Dept considers Muslims as a Disadvantaged Minority

The Commerce Department is considering naming Arab Americans a socially and economically disadvantaged minority group that is eligible for special business assistance.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) petitioned Commerce earlier this year to ask that Arab Americans be made eligible for the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), which helps minority entrepreneurs gain access to capital, contracts and trade opportunities.

The ADC petition cited “discrimination and prejudice in American society[,] resulting in conditions under which Arab-American individuals have been unable to compete in a business world.” The group claimed discrimination against Arab Americans increased after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

At least they stick together and fight for the interest of their people. They see weakness and they attack it.

I reckon the Commerce department can coddle Muslims if they're of a mind to, but it will encourage a lot of folks to avoid dealing with them all the more just because the preferential treatment offends them.

The problem here is that the coddling will lead to regulations that will require "set-asides" specifically in the area of government contracting, which will lead to muslims infiltrating our government from the defense department to homeland security.

Just one more reason to eliminate the Commerce Dept. Sell off its data gathering and statistical publication functions as a business, and close down the rest.

Commerce, Agriculture, Labor, Education, Energy are the departments that should be closed down in the first year of a new administration. It will take somewhat longer to wean the dependent public off of HHS and HUD, but five years should be plenty of time to sunset them. Getting rid of the US Trade Representative and kicking out the UN would save additional billions.

The only question is, are we too late?

I agree with cutting non-essential government departments too, but I don't recall seeing that after eight years of Bush. Do you think that just wasn't a priority? I can't imagine that since conservatives all want a limited government. Do you think a Romney presidency would be able to push those measures through? Or do both parties just like spending, but one party talks about how we spend too much?

Not a partisan comment, just seriously asking.

Good questions. Bush was not an extreme, libertarian, constitutional-originalist conservative, but I am. Imagine how much screaming there will be from the affected special interests when any serious reform of redistributionist government programs is announced. But it will have to be done, if we are to survive.

The Republican party is not synonymous with conservatives. It has an Establishment wing that is relatively happy with big government. Romney is in that wing, but I think his good business sense will enable him to enact some good reforms. Fortunately, it also has an ascendant conservative wing that I believe represents our best hope. People like Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Bobby Jindal are becoming leaders in that wing.

America needs Romney to win in 2012 just to survive. Beginning in 2016, with the younger, more conservative leaders, we will be moving forward on the path to success.

I wonder if Romneys business sense will be over-shadowed by his desire for political gain...

Smart people do dumb things in order to obtain or regain power.

Preferential treatment and carve outs are nothing more than Government sponsored discrimination. The system is being gamed so hard it's not funny.
