Hey all,
I just inherited a Weatherby mark v 270 magnum rifle and was interested to know if it can fire a 270 winchester round. I am new to firearms and have been studying up on pistols and now starting on rifles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Man
270 Magnum Question
Re: 270 Magnum Question
No. There is no interchange on this cartridge.
I suspect your rifle is actually chambered in .270 Weatherby Magnum, not 270 magnum.
You should only use the EXACT cartridge that is engraved on the barrel of the firearm.

Re: 270 Magnum Question
270 weatherby is a nice cartridge, but its a proprietary chambering, that only custom guns, or factory weatherby rifles use. As such ammo is much harder to come by, and a bit spendy when you do find it. Also the 270 wby is a bit of speed daemon, and it is a bit much for most eastern game uses. That's not to say you can't use it, but you usually wind up with more tissue/meat destruction than is needed for a clean harvest of the animal.
It makes a heck of a nice out-west long range medium game rifle, also would be very at home for African plains game.

Re: 270 Magnum Question
Thank you for all the information. I was planning on ordering about 40 rounds of 270 weatherby cartridges but at almost $2 a round is really high. I do not hunt and plan to shot a few rounds down range just to say I've shot it. After I fire it, I plan to clean, oil and store it and see if I can get some antique value out of it later down the road.jdonovan wrote:270 weatherby is a nice cartridge, but its a proprietary chambering, that only custom guns, or factory weatherby rifles use. The Weatherby Mark V deluxe I have is dated to 1962 and made in west germany based on the serial number.
Re: 270 Magnum Question
If you dont have a emotional attachment to the firearm you could always trade it on this site or gundeals.org for something you are more incline to shoot/hunt with. Thats a real nice rifle and im sure a lot of ppl would like to get thier hands on one. Just a thought
