Forget a free landline or previously getting a cell phone for low income to just call 911.. NOW you can get yourself a free 250 min talk time. Call your friends, call for takout, call miss cleo because it's free  free wireless internet service in in the works. The feds dont pay for it or ever have but they pass the savings onto the rest of us who pay for or phones..

Thank the good Lord. I was thinking I might actually have to have responsibility when I grow up.

Is the Obama phone real?
The State and Federal government has a program that provides free cellphones and free talk time to people with low income as well as senior citizens. This subsidized program is called Lifeline phones assistance program. But Obama hasn’t initiated it; it started few decades back and got its current format after going through several changes within this time. Safelink Wireless, the largest cellphone provider of the Lifeline program and a subsidiary of Tracfone, was created under the administration of George William Bush which received grants from a company that was launched during the Bill Clinton’s time and it was done because of an act passed by President Franklin Roosevelt which in turn was influenced because of an agreement between President Woodrow Wilson’s administration and some telecom service providers. So you can realize that this free cellphone service has a pretty long history and the claim about the Obama phone is nothing but a false rumor.
Because we all remember how worried President Woodrow Wilson was about poor people not having a cell phone. :hysterical:

for an emergency? naw
nobody needs 4 hrs to talk on a telephone for an emergency. Bama expanded the program. Wonder how much cell towers cost to maintain? I know some cell towers cost more than 5 k a month for one transmitter. Someone is paying for it... Give ppl a free or highly discounted land line. Or hand out free cell phones just to call 911. bama expanded the program. Sprint is very secretive about how many users they have signed up..

You used to be able to do that with any old N-AMPS analog phone, back in the day (on A or B band).

I carried an old Motorola bag phone with a cig light plug for years in case of an emergency. Maybe I'll donate it to a museum.

If you had a Federal program to help 5 people. The government would bloat it's funding and hire 15 people full time with benefits to administer it!
