Both pilots ejected prior to the crash. No word on their condition. This occurred in the Hilltop section of the city.

I have a Honda V4 club buddy who flies there. I hope he wasn't involved and is ok.

And the ambulance chasers, of which we have plenty in VA.

General B/G - I lived in south Hampton Roads for 20-plus years. Oceana was built to provide the master base for combat aircraft from carriers operating from NOB-Norfolk. It had built up overly much around NAS-Norfolk, which had shorter runways and less capacity. Secondly, when Oceana was built, Va Beach and Princess Anne county were lightly populated small town and rural.

Naturally, the developers and those others who profit from building, went ape with building in and around Oceana. The last bad crash with serious injuries and deaths of civilians of which I am aware (a F4 Phantom back in the '60s or '70s) made instant millionaires of a couple of lawyers.

The Navy has to have a sizable base with long runways to operate high peformance aircraft in and out of when the carriers are in port or drydock. My guess is that they would move the master jet base if there was a good location (and budgets allowed) within a reasonable distance of south Hampton Roads. If moved, then listen to the politicians howl from lost income from the area!

IMO, considering Oceana NAS, Norfolk NAS and Langley AFB and all the high performance filghts in that general area, it is a testament to military flight & safety methods that there aren't more crashes in easten VA.

I kept hearing about this on the radio today. Last I heard, there were no fatalities reported (4ish PM), so that's a good thing.

I also heard that if you found a piece of plane, you were to not touch it, and call the police immediately. The DJ on the radio said that it was a federal felony to touch a government plane (I was unaware of that... and I also question the truth in that). The DJ also reported that touching wreckage from the plane would pose a health risk. Anyone know what those health risks might be? Or was that something they said just to keep one from keeping a piece of the wreck?

Jet fuel is HIGHLY TOXIC, and it goes in thru the SKIN! Doesn't need to be inhaled, or ingested, just TOUCHED! Sorta like Lighter Fluid, Kerosene, or Acetone.

Make ya' sick as a broke-legged dog.

It's the same reason that they didn't want people to touch the shuttle when it exploded over TX.

Yep just like those people that are complaining about some shooting range that was there before their house was even in planning. You build a house in anywhere and you assume some risks.

Also the accident investigators collect all the pieces and for anykinda clues as to why the accident happened. In this case I suspect pilot error as it was a training squadron.

I worked with fuel for the Marines for 20 yrs, it is a kerosene based fuel. I have been doused head to toe with the stuff in Somalia. As long as you wash off before too long there are no ill effects from the fuel. Of course there is benzene and other carcinogens but nothing that makes it highly toxic.

if you think about it our forefathers used the stuff as a solvent and parts cleaner and they did fine.

I agree with the poster above, there should be no ill will against the base or the Navy. The base was here first. We crowded the base and put ourselves in harms way.

My wife and son are at VA Beach now, spring break. Their hotel is on 18th street, so they were shook up is an understatement.

Notice how the plane is in the middle of the courtyard? Pilot doing the best he could to minimze damage, hand of God, or both. Prayers out to all.

Ditto those uses plus puncture wound dressing if we didn't have turpentine.

Still living...

How does an aircraft accident warrant either?

I'd rather think it was a catastrophic system failure or they would have made it out to water.
The fuel is not so toxic that it could not be dumped over a populated area.
As noted above, there's lots of good reasons for barring public access to the wreckage. I would add that some members of the public would even walk away with human body parts. Thankfully, that was not a concern in this instance.

Conspiracy theorists are gonna claim that it's all a cover up for chemtrails. "The pilot knew to much" ect

Anti Military people are gonna to say there shouldn't be training over land ever again and/or call for the base to be moved.

I lived in Va Beach for 12 years. You choose to live near a base you know there is always a miniscule chance a plane could come down on your head. Having lived in VA for 22 years now this is the first time I can think of a plane coming down on top of people. The anti's need to find something else to fuss over.

Didn't even think of that. Only vaguely know about chemtrails, as for the flights many aircraft pass over many homes every day sans accident, military or civilian.

Back a while ago a law was passed that requires disclosure of where the property your buying lies in regard to aircraft noise and potential for crashes.. It was gonna happen sooner or later,, I've lived in VB 22 years and they haven't crashed any into private property till yesterday so their record is pretty good..The only other one was a flame during take off from Oceana and the pilot did his best to get it out over water before he went in...
