Why in the world would you confront 2 armed intruders in your home with an unloaded shotgun?
After two men burst into a home on Ridge Road, one fired a round from his handgun into a wall and the pair demanded money and prescription medication, witnesses told deputies. The home’s owner produced an unloaded shotgun, and the pair fled out the back door, one firing another shot, which struck the shotgun’s stock, according to officials. They got away with at least one pocket book, according to police.

Maybe he figured on clubbing them with it. Not the swiftest of moves on his part. 'Twas the Grace of God that those 2 robbers weren't too comfortable with the thought of being murderers.

He probably kept the gun around for home defense but thought he'd keep it safe and unloaded. Here's a hint: it's usually too late to load the weapon after the bad guys break in.

Because standing there pissing yourself isn't going to work real well.

You use what you have at the time. Sometimes all you need is a good bluff against a less-motivated opponent.

Yep I bet your right. Everyone is so concerned about the safety of a loaded gun around there kids or whatever. If it really bothers you to have a loaded gun around your house don't unload it get a quick access safe.

I was taught that a firearm should always be unloaded unless it is in use. If you're using a shotgun as a HD weapon, then it should be loaded when there is somebody there to use it as a HD weapon.

I'm not sure if this was a good bluff or the bad guy was just a bad shot but he did shoot the shotgun in the stock on his way out the door.
Bet the fellow could change his name to I.P Freely after that was all over with.
