Gift gun to someone in MI - FFL transfer?

I want to ensure I understand the law on transfer of a gun. I know I can gift a gun to anyone legally able to possess a firearm if there are a resident of Virginia. However, I want to gift a gun to my future father-in-law in Michigan. (I took him out shooting handguns after his lifetime with shotguns, and he's hooked.) As I understand, I can carry the weapon up there (reciprocity), then take it to an FFL dealer to transfer the firearm. I can not just outright give it to him. Correct?

If it were me I would just give him the gun, Unless you thnk someone is going to tell on you? Not suggesting you break any laws here but I personally am not a big fan of the Gun Control Act of 68 which causes gun owners to knuckle down to regulations that are in themselves far too restrictive and cause much ado and paranoia all the time...

VBshooter - guns are required to be registered in Michigan. That's the part that throws this for a loop.

I thought they were only registering handguns.
