I own a GSG5 and I want to put a retractable stock on it. What is the length requirements for a rifle in virginia? Is this measured open or closed?

no VA law that I know of.

Federal law
16" barrel
26" OAL with the stock in the extended position
If the rifle can be fired with the stock folded, the 26" length still applies.

If you want to go less than those, you need to turn it into a short barreled rifle, and get the tax stamp for an NFA firearm.

Just to clarify (because it's very easy to get confused), that 26" applies to the stock at maximum extension, regardless of whether it can fire while folded or collapsed.

And yes, you do have to meet both the barrel minimums and the overall minimums.
