Searching for Long Range.. and about to start Reloading..

Post by 001 »

Hey Gunnies,

I just bought a Rem 700pss in 308 26" and my future long term project is probably a custom Rem 700 in 338 Lapua.. I will start learning long range precision soon.. Figured the 308 win is the best bet for learning all the calculations needed in long range.

I also am about to start learning reloading since the 338 Lapua is a... :bangin: .. yeah.. expensive piece to shoot. I figured also that the 308 was a nice way to be able to play with precision reloading.. I hear the Dillon's are nice and plan on one..

First.. Does anyone know of any range or land "Further" than 100yds.. Clarks is 100yds and that's the cream of the crop I hear.. Although I hear Quantico ( which would be awesome ) but I hear the list is limited and almost impossible to get on.. Any suggestions or invites would be great.. Really want to stretch out my abilities and play with my new Leupold 6x18x40

Second... Does anyone have any recommendations for this rifle I mentioned in 308 win.. Reloading, Ammo preferred, etc.. Also what is a good book(s) on reloading that can show me the right path to correctly reload and get started.

Thanks Gunnies !

P.S - BTW I am a recently new addition to VGOF and I am having a great time on the forum, thanks for all the great info..

Where do you live??? If you live in the nova area 340 defense (30 min outside of leesburg) in WV you can shoot up to 400 yards. A bit further out you can shoot 800 yards

No, 340 400 yards
and peace keeper offers 1000 yards---- Edit thought it was only 800. Further out I meant to say 30 min further than 340...

340 is my favorite, they are not up your arse and leave you alone. 30 bucks for yearly pay by hour membership and $330 (?)for unlimited.

I also know a place that is putting in a mile long bench but im not allowed to say yet  :coffee:

You have to check your local county laws. Every county is diffrent when it come to shooting at your house outside. You have to be a certain distance from a dwelling and property line and it is not measured in yards but feet. Dont bother with blue ridge IMO. 340 is the way to go. Right off rt 7 30 min from leesburg and I consider it in the NOVA area. There is also range 82 in faquire county and if your looking for a indoor range check out silver eagle in ashburn or just go to the NRA range in fairfax. BR is geared towards leo's and is always packed. Keep in mind the NRA range is a bit expensive but they fight for gun owners rights!!

NOVA Ranges that I have used:

Sharpshooters Small Arms Range in Lorton, VA ( Formerly Gilberts )
-Small arms only

NRA - HQ in Fairfax
-I think they allow up to 50 BMG
-50yds

Clarks Brothers in Winchester, VA
-MUST BUY their ammo
-No range fee
-Clay, Pistol, and Rifle range

Blue Ridge Arsenal
-expensive and sells guns mostly at MSRP.. Though they do sell used firearms

Blue Ridge Arsenal is not expensive....if you are a senior. $140 for an annual membership, private member-only range times, priority at other times, no additional fees per visit. Of course, nothing long range. For comparison, $140 is ten 1-hour visits to the NRA range.

Silver Eagle membership is 3X the BRA senior price, plus a $100 first-year initiation fee. No discounts for seniors.

Sharpshooters membership is about 2X the BRA senior price. No discounts for seniors.

Plus free doughnuts and coffee at BRA. Just what I DON"T need!
