That could get confusing! I think NASA was trying to use the word as "A position of employment; a job", but you will have to ask them.

In the military, a billet is also used as a designation as a specific job (MOS) as in we have 3 billets (slots) for 0311s.

Did you get this idea from a upcoming episode of "Sons of Guns"?. I could have sworn that I saw this on a Discovery Channel trailer last night. :dunno:

Next week: Sheriff Boudreau calls on Will Hayden and the crew at Red Jacket to build a intergalactic asteroid blaster (a modified Saiga 12 shotgun) to save the bayou from total destruction.

And some guy brings in a old gun you've never heard of to be repaired, or something.

I was thinking he was going for the u but hit the i instead. However looking back at the last line in his post however it appears that you are correct.

I know that was true of the Coast Guard in the early 70s. A "billet" was an authorized position. I happen to know that know because as one of the very first class of graduates with an MIS concentration at the McIntire School of Commerce of the U of Va, I worked for free (part of the class work, don't you know) for a professor who was consulting for the Coast Guard on figuring out how to assign billets to Coast Guard stations based upon their activities. It was vastly complicated by the fact that there appeared to be little correlation between how many billets a station was assigned and how many people with what ratings were actually assigned there; and the people who kept track of billets either didn’t have or wouldn’t show us any information on actual staffing levels. The Coast Guard, after all, is part of the US gub'mint. Also, at that time, it was part of the Transportation Department, IIRC.

actually I got the idea from the news. They are currently predicting a 1 in 659 chance that we get hit, although its way too early for accuracy. Not sure if I got the 6XX number correct, but either way, 1 in 6XX is not appealing.

They are talking about manning up a team to start talks of a deflection plan. Sounds like its right out of a movie.

This is pretty amusing...

I will say that the laws of physics would not allow a bullet to leave the earths gravitational pull, thus rendering this idea useless. I'm not saying that it isn't a fun topic to discuss and laugh about,I just wanted to point out that it is not possible. While we are on the subject, the number for the 1911s should have at least 50% more to adjust for misfires....lol

we could strap 1911 owners to the back of a shuttle or ICBM? That should solve that.

Perhaps the march of advancing technology will help save us. If Arsenal Firearms can make enough of those double-barrelled 1911s fast enough, we'll only need 2,273,232 billets. Maybe we can get Homeland Security to squander some of the money they regularly pitch up a wild hog's @ss to buy them.

And I'll loan both you and ratherfish a 1911 if you want to go. Maybe you two can shoot it out while you're out of range of the rest of us.

Ticket sales for this event would go a long way towards paying off the national debt :hysterical:

The "1911 Solution" has a lot of merit but I have to ask.. What are all our other scientists, politicians, and corporate capitalists doing about this? There's got to be a way to turn this whole asteroid thing into a big opportunity towards our mutual advantage. I really like the ticket sales idea. The local entrepreneurs are already looking at it the right way.
