I have searched & searched. Are there / is there somewhere that has a collection or display or inventory of different holsters (other than LEO suppliers) that I can "try on" before purchase?

Most of the posts that I see are from people that have bought & don't use it.

Best bet is to take your sidearm to a gun show and try holsters there. There's usually a good selection available, and by virtue of being at a gun show, your sidearm will be unloaded and safer to fiddle with while you work it in and out of various holsters.

+1 to this. That's one of the first things I try to do with a new gun.

Also, resign yourself to the fact that you're going to end up with holsters you never use. I literally have a bucket of holsters in the closet - ones I purchased, ones that came with guns I purchased, etc - all that I can't really use.

Once you have an idea of what you are looking for, then start trolling places like eBay, GunBroker, etc, for similar ones. I found my primary holster on eBay - $0.99 plus shipping. Turned out it was a perfect fit for more than one of my guns, too. And even if it hadn't worked out, the $$ risk was pretty small.

Yes but they are are going to want put a zip tie thru barrel and out the chamber meaning the gun may or may not fit into some holsters.

I've never heard of a place having holsters you can try out. I've also just been resigned to buy and sell. What specific gun are you looking to holster and what requirements do you have? I'm sure there would be enough feedback here to get you pretty darn close.

Most places will cut the zip-tie so that you can try out a holster and they'll have replacement zip ties ready to re-tie your gun when you're done.

My students usually laught at my "box of shame" that I bring to class with all kinds of "bought that, can't use" holsters.

I got tired of looking for holsters local. I've been in every gunshop within 75 miles with no luck on a IWB crossbreed style. I just finally ordered a couple from theisholsters.com, one for the sigp220 and a second for my new FNH FNP-9.
I have a good start on my bucket of holsters.
