Can I by another gun

I bought a pistol grip 12 ga Mossberg with a 18 1/2 barrel at the gunshow Jan 8. I plan on going to the gunshow in Hampton next week. I'am looking to buy a 1911 45. Will the Va 1 gun a month law prevent this? I know they say there are no background checks at gun shows but I filled out two forms and had to wait a half hour for my gun. What was this about? Thanks for any info

There are background checks at gun shows when you buy from an FFL dealer. The only time there's no background check is when you buy from a private seller who's not a licensed dealer.
The one gun a month law is on handguns only. Your new shotgun doesn't count against that. So, yes - go buy another gun!
If you get your Concealed Handgun Permit, the one per month rule doesn't apply...you can buy as many handguns as you want if you have a CHP.
You can go here for an online training course that will qualify you for your CHP. If you have no other firearms training or experience, it's still a good idea to also get some hands-on, instructor lead instruction.

Ah yes, the mythical "gun show loophole". Now you know the real truth. There ARE background checks at the gun show, just like buying at a brick and mortar gun shop.
Private sales between two Virginia residents is legal anywhere. Not just at a gun show.

Thanks for the quick response. Think I can find a Rock Island 1911 45 or something equal at the next show?

You can find Rock Islands and pretty much any other type of 1911 at most of your brick and motar stores and usually cheaper. It seems most dealers will increase the price at gun shows these days to take advantage of those people looking for a deal. The real deals these days are found online and shipped to your dealer.

I called a few stores and the only inexpensive 1911 I found was made in Turkey. Tisas I believe was the manufacturer for $435. Couldn't find many reveiws on them.

It would help if we knew where you are located at. But I know I have seen RIA 1911s at both Sterling Arsenal (Sterling, VA) and NOVA Armament (Herndon, VA). I have heard good things about Taurus PT1911 as well. Last I saw they were selling for around $500.

If you're set on a RIA check out
http://www.centerfiresystems.com/ and find a local FFL to do the xfer for you. CFS is widely used by folks on the RIA section of 1911forum.com
Rocks are a great value.

Be very careful here. If the shotgun was indeed equipped with a pistol grip when sold, it may have been put through as a pistol on the forms and the v-check. Fox84, check with the dealer you bought from, if you can, or VSP to find out if you can but another handgun and save the embarrassment of a Denied response.

Did the state ever decide whether the PGO shotguns were handguns under 18.2-308.2:2(G)? I'm a little behind in reading the newsletters.

DK Firearms hits most of the gun shows and has RIA 1911s for about $400. He has the lowest prices at the Chantilly and Dale City gun shows, and is a good guy to work with.

I bought a RIA 1911from Bud's on Tuesday. It was deliverd on Friday at my FFL. I took a NRA class today to carry concealed permit. The gun shot 50 rounds flawless and was very accurate. I'am extremely happy with my purchase and ready to buy again. Maybe a pocket pistol. The dealer at the show registered my Mossberg as a shotgun. Thank goodness because the denial would have been embarrassing. Thanks for all the help.
