A newly-unearthed photograph showing Mitt Romney demonstrating in favour of the Vietnam War draft might leave the presidential candidate feeling somewhat embarrassed.

The veteran Republican, then 19, can be seen picketing an anti-war sit-in at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, in 1966.

Taken at the height of the swinging Sixties, Mr Romney holds a sign declaring 'Speak Out, Don't Sit In' as, alongside like-minded individuals, he proclaims his support for Lyndon Johnson's ever-expanding draft.

The GOP hopeful spent just one year at Stanford before heading to France for 30 months of missionary work.

I was also 19 in 1966.

I can also tell you in no uncertain terms that my political views changed dramatically in the last 45 years.

In those days I was a definite Democrat and would have voted that way if I had been allowed. (That was before the voting age was lowered to 18.)

I avoided the draft by enlisting in the US Navy and avoided going to southeast Asia by volunteering for submarines.
(As far as I know there were no submarines assigned to any of the river rons.)
I spent most of the last years of the VN "war" either going to school, teaching school, or cruising around in a Polaris missile boat with a bunch of nuclear warheads.

My point is, don't lynch someone for something they did as a teenager 45 years ago. He could have been doing that stuff to impress a young lady or some of his peers. Most people that age have absolutely NO concept of the big picture.

Marching in favor of a draft you know you'll never have to answer to is a **** move in any place and time.

Remember, no matter how nice the fruit looks, if it came from bad roots, well, you'll find out when you take a bite. Youth is not an excuse, rather, an indication of where one got their character.

Yeah I'm not a liberal or a conservative, just an issue by issue kind of guy.

Now tell me how my generation doesn't appreciate good music, understand how it was to walk 14 miles in 8ft deep snow to get to school, etc etc etc.

Guess it escapes you that a person could support duty of one sort and engage in duty of another sort..?

Many of us find that totally normal.

I work seven days a week. Millions of baby boomers depend on me.

Just because the government gives you a weekly check doesn't mean "unemployed" is a truly full time job.

Off the top of my head, Motherhood is the only position that I can think of that requires that much time.

I work for a major corporation in a management position that puts me on call 365 days a year 24/7.
I finish my day when the work is done. It begins when the work starts on a very prosperous line of business.

Every option we have stinks...all of them. It is just a question of which one's particular stink you can tolerate. Romney, Santorum, Paul, Obama--they are all infuriating. But politics is a dirty business those who engage in it do so at great risk to their corruption of their character.

On another note Kruetz you were 13 in 1969? I thought you and I were similar in age....my mom was 12 in 1969.

That is true...Obama, IMO, stinks the worst. So even some relief from that stench would be a better option.
