I have noticed, as I have browsed through various online ads for private gun sales, that folks seem to be concerned with how many times a gun has been fired. I'm wondering why that matters.

I've also noticed that some guns will have tape over the serial numbers. Of what possible use would a serial number be?

It kinda like miles on a car. Lower the rounds higher the value.

The best explanation I have heard on the SN thing is that someone could report the gun stolen but you can't do that anonymously so...........

As well, it is a notification of where the arm is on its regular maintenance or break-in schedule.

THE s/n is a factor of identity that just shouldn't be shared.

Post unique identification numbers of any kind is always a bad idea. Once posted on the Internet, they aren't ever going away (practically). Even if they are not of value today (debatable), how do you know they won't be in the future?

How can one verify this beyond checking the bore and making a guess as to wear?

Pretty much, not like car odometers can't be changed.
