I might be moving to VA from MA and had some questions.
1. Can you purchase long guns, ammo and reloading supplies online\mail order, or do you need to go through an FFL?
2. I reload, are there limits on how much powder, primers, or ammo you can have in your home?
3. Can you have magazines that exceed 20 rounds without a CCW, if they are pre-Assault Weapon Ban?
If we do go ahead with the move, I'll get my CCW I'm just wondering if my MA legal guns\gear is safe to bring. All my pistol mags are 10rds or less, but I've got some pre-ban 20s and 30s for my AR.
Thanks in advance

Re: VA law and reloading
You can order reloading supplies and ammo on line and have them delivered to your house.
You can't order guns onlne and have them sent to your house but there are lots of people around with FFLs who will charge you a fee (some cheaper than others) to order a gun for you/allow you to have one delivered to them for you to pick up after the paperwork is filled out.
There are no magazine restrictions in VA. You can go to a gun show (as well as some dealers) and buy all the standard capacity magazines you want. I saw 30 round PMags at a dealer the other day. I've bought Glock 15 round magazines and even 32 round magazines at the gun shows in Richmond.
I've never researched limits on primers/powder/ammo. I just buy stuff, reload, shoot it, buy more stuff - repeat the process.

VA Code § 18.2-308. Personal protection; carrying concealed weapons; when lawful to carry.Sibb wrote:I might be moving to VA from MA and had some questions.
1. Can you purchase long guns, ammo and reloading supplies online\mail order, or do you need to go through an FFL? Long Guns online through an FFL, Ammo and reloading supplies can be ordered direct
2. I reload, are there limits on how much powder, primers, or ammo you can have in your home? Don't know, I only keep a pound or two of the types I use
3. Can you have magazines that exceed 20 rounds without a CCW, if they are pre-Assault Weapon Ban? You can own large mags. some restrictions on carry in certan cities of mags over 20 rounds. In VA we have a CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit) not a CCW

1) All arms in interstate transfer must go through a dealer (federal law), reloading supplies, direct to your home.Sibb wrote: 2. I reload, are there limits on how much powder, primers, or ammo you can have in your home?

2) NFPA suggests limits of:
10,000 primers, 20 LB's of powder without a powder magazine. 50lbs with a magazine (wood box with 1" walls)
3) There is no such thing as a pre/post ban magazine in Virginia.

As for how much you can legally store, it's dictated by your county fire code. IIRC, many limit it to 100lbs before you need a license, but the powder magazine comes in between 20 and 50lbs usually.

Virtually everything you know about gun laws is not applicable in Virginia. We still pay some lip service to the concept of liberty here.

Also, you can have any magazines of any capacity mailed to your door in Virginia.

If it is legal for you in MA, bring it on down. There is only one kind of firearm you can't own here (Streetsweeper law...basically folding stock shotgun with more than 12 rd mag). So called "high cap mags", silencers, machine guns, short barrel rifles/shotguns, AOWs all are legal. The concept of pre/post ban does not exist here..just a bad memory.
Face to face purchase of firearms (handguns and longuns) is legal between Virginia residents and does not require an FFL. An FFL is required for any interstate sales (federal law). Reloading supplies do not require an FFL.
You will find getting your CHP (CCW) is much easier here and open carry is legal. http://www.vcdl.org

To clarify, That should read " All arms in interstate transfer BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS or from a business to you must go through a dealer (federal law), reloading supplies, direct to your home."jdonovan wrote: 1) All arms in interstate transfer must go through a dealer (federal law), reloading supplies, direct to your home.
You need not tell ANYONE what you are bringing or register anything with anyone when you move here with your own firearms. (NFA items that need to be reported to the BATFE not withstanding.)
All federal firearms laws still apply WRT NFA items, of course.
Also, any adult that can legally own a handgun can open carry it pretty much anywhere in VA WITHOUT A PERMIT FROM ANYONE. There are exceptions, of course, and some businesses do post their premises "No Guns".
