BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The high tech crime fighting tool known as ShotSpotter is coming to North Bellport.

The town is planning to install 16 sensors in the area of the Bellport train station. The devices are designed to help police pinpoint where and when gunshots are fired.

WCBS 880′s Mike Xirinachs spoke with local businesswoman Corey Bloom in the business district surrounding the train station about the technology.

What a bunch of dumb@sses. Feller ought to take one of those co2-powered T-shirt shooters (they just go "whoosh") up there and shoot cherry bombs all over town some night. Probably get himself shot, though.

This is not new technology. It is in use in numerous metropolitan areas across the country. "Listeners" time latency between audible signals and triangulate a position.

It is actually a very simple concept and process.

OMFG! I remember this! They finally did it huh? Bellport is a dump.

I've seen this before and asked if it was sensitive to other loud noise and the rep I was talking to swore that they have tested it and it would only hear gunshots. I still think that's not true.

Ironically I went to Bellport high School;while the village of Bellport is a rich enclave (though not hamptons rich-these days probably think lower upper class, high middle class) -North Bellport was one of the worst slums in the entire state of New York, very violent and gentrified, I had heard it was getting better in recent years but i guess not. So odd to see a bit of the place I grew up being mentioned (technically i am froma place called east Patchogue-we were more working class).
The dichotomy was always odd because it was literally a wrong sides of the track place.
While it is definitely big brotherish I know why they saw the need, though I do find it curious they are only placing it in the area where redevelopment is planned. (read curious as going ah they only care about the money)

Has anyone watched the videos of the English taking care of the traffic cameras? Some of them are pretty funny. Some are pretty good ways of taking out electronic monitoring gear.

It "hears" everything, but a gunshot has a very distinctive sound signature, which the system looks for. Not even a car backfire has the same sound shape as small arms fire. It's the same technology that's on tanks out on the battlefield already. If you're really interested in it, google ShotSpotter, or PDCue...

It will allow the SCPD (suffolk county police dept) to show up after the fact and mill around for 12-14 hours to get more overtime. Thats how.

one of the highest paid police forces in the country and they used to have one of the worst response times in the nation not sure if that is true anymore (the resposne time-I doubt the pay has gone down lol)....Heck half the towns in the county opted out of their coverage and went with their own local police (all the east end towns like Southhampton for example)

They tended to ignore North Bellport too (especially the Pace Park area).

They were still useless when I moved, but the local PD's are one part of the very high tax burden in the metro area. The place I moved here from had 44 full time cops in a town that was 2.2 square miles in area. And a DPW. And a fire department. Property taxes started at around 14k/year...wonder why?

I'm totally shocked that this Long Island town has the need for that technology. With all the gun control they have up there and their blatant disregard of the Second Amendment rights afforded most Americans elsewhere in the U.S., I would have thought the sounds of gunshots would be non-existent. You mean there's actually a small chance that gun control laws don't work? Nah, that couldn't possibly be.
