Do you want a quality AK or a bargain bin AK? (And haven't you asked this before?)

I don't know if it is a decent price, but Sterling Arsenal has a new out of box one on consignment on display in their show room, think asking is $1300
but it sounded like there was some play in that price. They also have a SAIGA AK as well but not sure on the price on that.
I'd check them out

Virginia arms, Manassas had some on the shelf the last time I was in.

Price varies A LOT depending if you want a CAI with crooked sights, or an Arsenal.... there can be 300% variance between those 2 makers.

Century AKs run $500 or so. Arsenal AKs run $800 to $900. Virginia Arms has an Arsenal in 7.62x39 for $850 or so. Saigas are running $300 now. Hit the Chantilly Gun Show this weekend, you'll see quite a few of them. And bring proof of citizenship, Virginia doesn't want foreigners buying "assault weapons."

Personally, I bought a Saiga in 7.62x39 and am doing the conversion to AK myself. I'm most of the way there, I'm skipping the front sight change and I'm putting an AK-74 style brake on it.

I asked in the Nations gun show thread, a half way dencet one (ie $600-$800).

Not much in that price range. Maybe check Gunbroker for de-banned MAK-90s, I hear they're going for ~600.

I just picked up my Arsenal from Virginia Arms last night. They had at least eight AKs on the wall.

A little over $900. Their other AKs were from $500 on up. Arsenals are built using both Russian and American parts. Some of the AKs there were Bulgarian.

But then you'd have an AR and not an AK :hysterical: $900 gets you an ok AR. $900 gets you a top of the line AK. BTW, I just spent about $150 for 1080 rounds of 5.45x39 ammo shipped.

If by "74 platfrom" (sic) you mean the 5.45 caliber, then no, they make them in 7.62 and 5.56. If, however, you mean "74 platfrom" (sic) in the sense of a modernized AK-based firearm (different bolt design, gas block, etc.), then mostly yes (they also make milled receiver AKs, which are really old school, but we don't see many of them anymore for what are probably best described as business decisions).

If you're looking for an AK-74 or AK-100 platform, you're going with Arsenal, which start at $700-800. Interarms -74s start at around $600.

If you're looking for an AKM, you're looking at a Century (starting at ~$450) or Interarms (starting at ~$600).

If you're looking at an AK-47 (stamped, old style stock) the Century Polish 1960 is nice, and starts at around $600.

None of them are hard to find, just check around the shops. A gun show is the best bet to get your hands on multiple specimens.

Do you have any pics? just started doing the same thing myself. Figured I'd be crazy not to since you wind up with a legit Russian AK in the end! Not worth all the hassle that the cheaper variants deal with. I'd like to do the front sight post and gas block (for the cleaning rod) but the cosmetic difference probably won't be worth it. Where did you get your barrel threaded?
