This is where I graduated from and the only time I have ever had to run for my life--TWICE! If I was going to be anywhere near this place I would most assuradly have a weapon of some sort. On the response time to call boxes--yeah we wittnessed a car break in progress (walked right past it) and pushed that button--7 minutes. Now how much damage could those thugs have done to me in that length of time. Nope--ODU is ridiculous to even be considering this.

I graduated from there as well. I never had any problems however I did get a concealed carry and a 9mm as soon a turned 21 and got off campus. See a few shootings in my apt complex while walking my dog.

Having gone to college after spending 4 years in the US Army I don't believe most college kids need to be carrying guns around campus.

To much alcohol, too much pot, too much "I'm away from mom and dad and I can do any stupid obnoxious thing I want to do."

Sorry. Yes, I carried my .357 with me to class every day in my GI rucksack with my books, pens, pencil, calculator, snacks, etc. However, I was past the "kid" stage after 4 years in the military.

Seems that a LARGE majority of poll participants agree that banning guns is a bad idea.

M1A4me,
the vast majority of college kids COULDN'T legally carry a gun on campus ANYWAY. You've got to be 21 to buy a handgun and 21 to get a concealed carry license.
I voted early and often. One of my students from last year is going to ODU this year. He asked me advice about getting a shotgun for HD while living in an apartment near campus so I took him to the range, got him familiar with safey and basics, let him try a few things. I'd have no problem with him or some of my other former kids carrying around me.

I understand that the impression people get from today's colleges is that kids are drinking and doing drugs like crazy and while that may be true from time to time a bunch of "students there just want to go to and from class without being raped and killed. How is a 21 year old young lady to defend herself from a drugged up idiot who has his sights on her. I got away--but someone else might not or the guy might pursue them anyway and kill them in the subways with 15 people watching. If we say because there are people there who use drugs and alcohol in the community no one should be allowed to defend themselves we are going to find ourselves put in that box too. Adults outside of colleges drink and do drugs too, so should we be denied our right to keep and bear arms because someone else is stupid.

It is illegal to drink and concealed carry, it is most assuredly illegal to do drugs and carry. If a person dumb enough doing both at the same time eventually they will be caught and there goes their CHL.

Please write them an email as well as voting in a poll. They aren't going to look at an online poll and think, oh gee, we had better not do that! But a storm of contacts telling them what they're doing is wrong, and why, is more likely to stop this. Or at least cost them some sleep.

Please take two minutes to send a quick email to president@odu.edu, dmeeks@odu.edu, and rfenning@odu.edu

I voted, emailed all three, and made the mistake of reading the readers comments to the article. Should have had a duct tape warning at the end of the article.
