Hi all,

I've never done any long rifle shooting and am interested in learning how. I am looking at the Ruger 10/22 for a starting rifle, price seems to be right, its .22LR and they seem fairly common. What is everyone's opinion on this? Is this a good starting rifle? Or is there something else I should be looking at?

The caliber .22lr is a great starting point for anyone to start shooting rather its for a kid or a grown person. Very inexpensive to shoot the rifles are easy to maintain and as usually very accurate. A Ruffe 10/22 is a great choice in my opinion for a beginners rifle.
With the question you asked it's quite vague however pretty much no matter what your looking to do a Ruger 10/22 is a good starting point rather your just plinkin at the range, shooting cans of the fence at home. The .22lr is the caliber that most learn to shoot and then move to bugger calibers. I learned to shoot on a Vietnam era lever action .22lr when I was 4 years old. Still shoot the gun to this day.

I'd just be plinkig at the range to start-not looking for a hunting gun
Ideally something reliable and well built

Not a bad choice for a first rifle. Most people who shoot the Appleseed classes use it.

I think the 10/22 is a great choice.

The 10/22 is great because it's reliable, cheap to shoot, and everyone and their mother makes accessories for it. My dad owns one and it is a hoot to shoot. I'd own one myself but honestly I could always just borrow his.

I love my K10/22. Shoots one hole groups and is very reliable, as is from the factory. I plan on buying another to modify the heck out of. So many items to buy later if you want.

Be careful, I've heard stories....wouldnt know first-hand of course, I keep my nose clean God willing.

You start out with a new 10/22, and its good. You feel a rush! Then, as time goes on, the pleasure diminishes. You start to look around; why is your 10/22 so plain? On a whim you buy an accessory....just one you tell yourself, to see how it looks.

What you don't realize when you get that accessory in the mail from Cheaper Than Dirt (oh, and it will be from them, they get their hooks in early) is that inside the box there too is a catalog. Pages and pages of this tome will be dedicated to the 10/22....why, it could be your 10/22 if only you bought the fiberglass camo stock (and why not a folding stock model; you deserve it right?, the cheek rest, ACOG scope, pistol grip, magazine release switch, butt stock mag pouch, drum magazine, so many choices!

Then, they find you at the range, passed out...was it from the weight of all the stuff you juiced that 10/22 with made you collapse? Maybe it was the debt, got to your head? Maybe shock, from that conversation you had with that pompous SKS owner who wouldnt shut the **** up about his gun "having even more customization options". They will never know.

No....you know it was the high of turning a $300.00 plinker into a $1,500 .22lr tactical death machine that will enable you to survive all comers, all takers....unless, wait, what if they have body armor!?! Surely there is a barrel that will enhance the velocity of the .22?!?!!? If it doesn't exist...perhaps you can make it yourself? Groaning, you rise, and begin the walk to what was once your home, your family long gone, having grown weary of seeing daddy become a shell (albeit a shell with a bad ass Ruger 10/22) of a man, and you begin sketching.

Perhaps for now, that will be enough...perhaps.

.22lr is a good round as long as you keep it under 100 yards. The 10/22 is a good little rifle, but I'd vote for a CZ bolt action .22lr if you wanted more accuracy for not much money.

The ruger 10/22 is a great choice, and not just because I own one. It is a very nice rifle, lots of accessories, and reliable (never had it jam once). I put a scope on mine and can hit the target with fair accuracy at a good distance without adjusting for windage and elevation.

Ammo is cheap, dirt cheap. I always have a box around somewhere, right now I have about 1000 rounds. Nice since I have a 30 round clip, though I heard at one time they had 100 round rotary clips for them.

IMO it's a great choice for a first rifle. It's one of the best .22's imo, and everyone needs a .22 as their first rifle.

My first (well, after the m-16 in the Army i guess) was a 30.06; stupid decision, you're right. Get that .22 first because you're gonna buy it anyway.

Great choice for a first rifle, they're fun to shoot and you can learn quite a bit about shooting when you start pushing past the 100 yard range.

I have owned 7, currently own three... Oh yeah... GREAT starting rifle!

Between that, a Remington 870, and a 4" inch barrel .357... that's a "Farm Combo" in my opinion.

A 10/22 is just a plain good rifle period...for starters or experts. Once your done plinking you can customize the crap out of them. I've got a very nice one and it is sweet.

I definitely love my .22lr, though I have a Savage Mark II since I wanted the bolt action. Several friends of mine have the 10/22 and really like them. Right out of the box they are a fun plinking gun. After a time though, each person has customized their guns so they are all unique looking now. It is really amazing how much is out there to customize them to exactly what you want.

As far as .22lr's in general, I think I have more fun shooting that then anything. They are cheap to shoot and are a great tool to hone your skills. Most ranges will let you use them indoors too if that is an option you are looking for.

We have a lot of fun trying to take the .22's out to 100 yds. It is also fun to "clean" up the clays we missed with the shotguns throughout the day or to shoot the spent 12 gauge cases laying about.

I love shooting the higher power weapons, but the fun factor with the .22 is almost unbeatable.

You know what really fun? Shoot skeet/trap/Clay pigeons with shotguns in the morning, collect the low wall shotgun shells that cannot be reloaded, set them up at 50 yards, and plink them with Ruger 10/22 after lunch...

It's the BEST day off...ever! HAHAHA
