Thanks tinner. Im stuck at work today, so i dont think i can make it out. Weekends are better if you are around. On a different note--- I am now 100% tooled for AK building. My tooling set arrived last night.
Its the akmachinist tools, I bought it off akfiles.com. I must say, its a very nice set. I am going to start hunting for the build party date this weekend, based on maximum availability of interested particpants. Generally, I am shooting for middle of February. Possibly the 22nd. Weeekend of the 15th and 16th is RIGHT OUT, since most of our wives, girlfriends or partners may have plans for us.
Anyone who is interested, check the board this weekend for a signup. The Feb target date should give you enough time to buy a kit and demil it as best you can or seek help in your demil.
Remember- you dont have to build from a flat if you dont want to. Nodakspud.com has great recievers and they are fully heat treated. If you choose this route you will save quite a bit of time... but its more expensive and you miss out on "making it your own" going soup-to-nuts from a flat.

Awesome! Looking forward to it. As a side note the last weekend of February would be a no go for me.

We may need another site for the BP. 762 may not be able to host at this point. Anyone else willing to host?

I've been wanting to do this for a long time and just got back from deployment this week. It must be fate. I've subscribed to this thread so hope it happens.

If there is no one willing to host, then I would be happy to guide builders at my place, AtomicPunk. I can help 1 or 2 people, have all tools except for blasting and parkerizing.

I have less freedom on weekends to commit than I get on weekdays, so it's real iffy that I can host.
That said, if I get freed up, I might be able to. The shop is unheated though. You'll need to wrap up if I'm able to help.

First time poster, longtime VA resident and 2nd Amendment supporter. I actually joined this forum *specifically* for this particular post. I first read about build parties earlier today while looking at variant comparisons for my next purchase, and they sound completely awesome. Lo and behold, I search to see what's going on here in VA and you guys are planning this lovely little shindig. I've wanted my next firearm to be an AK platform, and I wouldn't mind it being a personal labor of love. Don't have much to contribute except a pair of hands, a willingness to learn and a love of the craft, but if someone has an extra kit I can buy and there's a spot open, I'd LOVE to be a part of this, maybe even bring a friend.

Thanks Dave. I just got back to NoVA.
A friend of mine who also just got back from deployment is interested too. He is travelling at the moment so I haven't heard back from him if the 8th works. If 762's place has a place to test fire, that would be ideal.
I don't have the parts yet. Did you get the email I sent with the parts kit/barrel I am looking at?
Thanks

AtomicPunk- Sorry I havent gotten back to you. The links were 404 when I tried them both. What I *can* tell you is this---
The barrel needs to be finished, populated and headspaced for your kit. If not, it will take too much time at a BP. Barrel populating/headspacing is a job in itself. Other than that-- if you get the right rivets, flat and retaining plate you should be good to go with any russian/romanian/EasternBloc parts kits. My tools will handle those kits well. Bring your friend if you wish... the more the merrier.
DangerousDan-- I'd be willing to take an extra or two at my place for a total of four builders. Here are the ground rules for everyone-
1) Be prepared to show VA ID and CHP/Voter Card. As a responsible gun owner, I need to make sure anyone building is not a prohibited person.
2) You will be building this rifle. I will help guide/advise and lend you my tools, but the whole point is for you to make this rifle. Also, legally I *cannot* do anything for you on the reciever. I can only advise.
3) If anyone brings any FA parts, you will be asked to leave immediately. If your kit came with them (and that is common) make them disappear BEFORE you show up.
4) AK-Builder flats only, please. Other maker's flats will either a) come out deformed and useless and/or b) damage my bending die.
5) Dont forget your 922(r) parts! You need 6 US made parts on an AK platform. Typically they are- Hammer, trigger, disconnector (Tapco G2 FCG), Receiver, muzzle brake, pistol grip. You can mix N match different parts... read up on 922(r) about stocks, barrels etc to see where your 6 parts are coming from.

Thanks Dave. That info about the barrel helps alot. I was wondering how we could get all that done in one go. Now it all makes sense.
Also, my friend is Active Duty military and has orders to Virginia. Is that good enough for you? It is for buying a gun from an FFL.

Hey Dave, is it OK if I drop in, assuming I'm in the area? Just to put my face out there, say hello and meet a member or two.

Frank, you have a standing invitation to come over, to build or just hang out.

Talking to AtomicPunk-- It seems that the AK74 flats do not have a option on the AKB site for predrilled holes. That means a hole drilling tool.

Sigh... Its only money, right?
