I'm thinking about having a 50/50 drawing if I can get away with it - park rules say no gambling...Sweetpea wrote:Are we all pitching in to help cover the cost of the park rental? I'd like to.

Re: OC Picnic Discussion
not a gambler so unsure what that means. you would draw a name an that person has to pay half? I was at a family picnic a few years ago where they put out a big pretzle jar and had people put as much in as they could afford. Everyone put in a few bucks and that covered expenses and they had some $ left over.

50-50 drawing is where you sell tickets for example at $1 each. When all the tickets are sold you draw one from the hat. The winning ticket gets 50% of the money taken in. Rest goes to the kitty.Sweetpea wrote:not a gambler so unsure what that means. you would draw a name an that person has to pay half? I like Sweetpea's idea better, we'll write her name on every entry and put them in a jar to draw.zephyp wrote:50-50 drawing is where you sell tickets for example at $1 each. Re: OC Picnic Discussion
Rather than the 50/50, which has more of a gambling overtone to it, we'll probably do just that. There will be a jar of some sort near the prize table for donations to cover the picnic costs.Sweetpea wrote:I was at a family picnic a few years ago where they put out a big pretzle jar and had people put as much in as they could afford. I like this idea, Rick although Gary does make an interesting observation - only lets write HIS name on all the tickets...allingeneral wrote:Rather than the 50/50, which has more of a gambling overtone to it, we'll probably do just that. Nice! I'm not that gullible (anymore...) LOL
I like the 50/50 idea (not my ignorant version). Whatever works.

Re: OC Picnic Discussion
The 50/50 is a great way to raise money for something, we just come into a problem with "gambling" at the park. Because of that we're better off with the donation jar. Sucks, doesn't it?Sweetpea wrote:"I like Sweetpea's idea better, we'll write her name on every entry and put them in a jar to draw. "

Re: OC Picnic Discussion
Sucks b/c its silly. Why would a park care about a private party doing a drawing? I don't get it.

It is silly, but not as silly as Gary thinking he's a turnip. We'll have enough people there to hold him upside down by his ankles...
No blood though, only money...

What is everyone concerned about the gambling thing for?
Isn't EVERYONE there going to be heavily armed?

Funny that being heavily armed is legal but gambling's a no-no. Reminds me of the gun/liquor law differences between VA and MD. In MD you can go to jail for carrying a gun but you can pull up to any drive through liquor store and get a pint of Jack and a cup full of ice. Something wrong with that picture.Hiwaytahell wrote:What is everyone concerned about the gambling thing for?

Agreed...

Re: OC Picnic Discussion
I personally do not think the Gmbling thing would be a problem. I was at a State Police picnic a few years ago and they had a 50-50 drawing to support the family of a fallen officer. I have also played 50/50 at firehouse during a country dance. I think more money would be collected when people know they have a chance to win their money, and some, back. With a Jar, people have to try and figure out what they think is an appropriate donation.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: OC Picnic Discussion
I haven't been following this thread since I didn't think I'd be able to attend. But it looks like I might, even though I will have VA-ALERT duty that weekend.
So, can someone confirm that the OC Picnic will be on September 26?
Thanks

Right now it looks like 26 Sep is the day from 10 - 2:30 in Fredericksburg - HOWEVER - Rick will probably be making an official announcement soon so consider this info as only a "draft" heads up for planning purposes only.OakRidgeStars wrote:I haven't been following this thread since I didn't think I'd be able to attend.
