I'm already hearing the term "assault shotgun" being bandied about by the so-called gun experts in the media.

From noted gun expert Piers Morgan:

Unsure of this Navy Yard has armed guards (from my own time in the Army when stuck on guard duty our weapons were unloaded), but if they did there goes the whole "good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun defense".

The NRA will be forced back on the defense accordingly.

Ah no actually it was good guys with guns that stopped the bad guy with a gun, they said the killing would have continued if not for the armed response.

Nah, that's like saying that a single school "resource officer" is sufficient to deter shooters in that environment, which has never been the NRA's position. The correct answer is "good guys with guns all over the place". It's a freaking military base. Surely there are plenty of people there with training in firearms safety and effective usage.

Well, they forgot the comma there. Apparently it is now being reported (here's an example) that he purchased an AR-15, a shotgun, and a handgun, from a gunshop in Lorton (Sharpshooters?).

Actually 12 dead is a slow Saturday night in the windy city.

CNN of all places is now reporting that no AR-15 was involved. Just a shotgun and two handguns at least one of which was taken off the officer he shot on entering. Of course that did not stop them from going on a rant about AR-15's listing all the other shootings where an Ar was used.

they did however say he used a laser firing, nuclear powered, machine gun. Most likely of the M16A1 variant.

We all know that military bases are gun-free zones, and we all know about Fort Hood. This is the post I took issue with. It sounds like you find fault with the NRA's statement. If not, perhaps you should explain what you mean.

My point was simple: A good guy with a gun is insufficient. Multiple, even ubiquitous, good guys, able to defend themselves and their comrades, are the answer.

HMMM ..... Here's a guy who the government had pretty much total control over including his medical care and all the information attendant to that. You know, sort of like what they appear to be aspiring to with Obamacare and gun control? And look what an outstanding job they did of preventing gun violence. Y'all ready to turn the whole damned world over to them?

IIRC, last time I was there, the guards (a mix of USMC Marines and DoD Police) were armed at the gates. DoD police also man entry control points in the NAVSEA buildings as well.

That said, not that hard to avoid these guards in the building, if you have the proper badge. It stands to reason that the shooter would have such access.

As far as the good guy with a gun issue...a good guy with a gun still needs training. Don't get me fired up about their level of training.

I have two questions. One is how did he obtain the guns with his criminal background? And secondly since he was a contractor in a government facility, he would have needed a security clearence. So my question is how to get one with A: his criminal background which will flag you when getting your clearence and B: wasn't he discharged from the military less than honorably which will also flag you for your clearence? So who let him through?

Questions questions everywhere, this smells of rotten fish!

Is it just me or is this thing being underplayed in the media? Unlike Sandy Hook it involved a black shooter who killed adults and it looks to me like it's importance is being put on a back burner to detract from it in an attempt to shove more gun control to the forefront instead of the real tragedy here....

Is it now socially acceptable for gangs of whites to roam streets and beat up anyone they wish while yelling this is for the Navy?

He was arrested in 2004 but charges were dropped. No charges were pressed in the 2010 "accidental discharge" incident (although based the story from the woman who lived upstairs, he had been hassling her for weeks). So no felony record exists.
