I got excited the first time, because it was new. The second time I nearly over looked it.
The third and possibily the fourth time I didn't know I was supposed to prepare for the Apocalypse and totally failed to recognise the the end of the danger.

I am making what I consider common sense preparations. Nothing extreme like many of the survivalists push. The less severe scenarios are far more likely; like a hurricane knocking out power for a week. However, the extreme scenarios are more fun to talk about.

I also prepare in light of the hurricane type and some minor things like plenty of ammo and haveing the wife practice along with me with diffrent weapons for home defense or self defense.

A week without power... I wish. The year we bought our house we went over a month without power because urban areas took priority for repairs due to the back to back hurricanes that hit florida.
For the initial question of semi vs revolver my answer is simple... BOTH.
I don't have a 1911, yet. I have a 40 semi and a 22lr semi which are both nice but I like having a 38special revolver on my ankle just in case.
as for a shtf situation I believe in forethought and being prepared. I moved to a semi rural 1 acre property and promptly planted clumping bamboo along the fence line to make a living wall. Planted fruit and citrus trees. fixed the second well and bought a easily installable hand pump [why does everybody forget water?]
as for protection...
bows are nice, quite, and the ammo can be recovered.
that said I think the ideal would be sitting on your roof when the zombies come with...
sniper rifle for distance
hunting rifle for a little closer
ar15 for closer than that and the occasional mob
pump shotgun for real close
semi-auto pistol for even closer
revolver as back up when reloading the above
Remmington chain saw on a stick for when they are trying to get on the roof
then there are the swords...
almost there
