The orginal design by stoner was for 308. My armalite 308nm does just fine. After owning one I would prefer a 308 over the 223. They both have thier place. But if I could only have one it would be a 308.

I don't have an AR, and the world is taunting me.

Yup, and while the AK shoots a larger bullet, it really is just a glorified, smaller than 9mm, FMJ carbine. If a .355" bullet is not good enough, why is a .308" bullet? Both fail spectacularly, but at least 5.56mm ammo weights less and occasionally fragments. Might as well throw rocks IMHO.

I'll agree that it's definitely fun, and easy to customize.

In 45 minutes, I put an entire Magpul kit onto my gun, and that was only because I was watching the History Channel with occasional distractions.

Does it piss off the liberals? Some, more than conservatives. That being said, I can roll off a few "Republicans" that hate guns more than some of the lib's we have here who OWN firearms.

Hmm, for me at least, my AR fetish started with a mistake: I let my friend talk me into shooting his. After that, there was no going back. I HAD to have one.

Things I love about mine:
-Reliability
-Accuracy
-ease of use/maitenence
-Acessories

Shot a few Ak's, just wasn't for me. I was more than happy to go back to my AR.

I like the platform, but my trigger time with the M16-A2s taught me that I wanted piston-drive and a bigger round for any rifle I bought with my cash. Thank you LWRC. Your 6.8 M6A2 makes me very happy.

The Sig 556 is fun too, but it needs a stock.

If you gotta have an AR platform and you can't decide whether you want a .223 or a .308, maybe you should look at a 6.5mm Grendel. Might be a good compromise on ballistics. On the other hand, the SHTF scenario argues against it because the cartidge is relatively uncommon compared to either .223 or .308. I've been intending to get an AR-10, but it seems like everytime I get two nickles to rub together, another 1911 pistol ambushes me.

<sigh>..... guns are a lot like women........we want 'em all, but can't afford it. Big difference is I could stand to have more guns than I could pay for...........

If I could only have one AR I would likely get one chambered in 5.56. The .308 would definitely have the bigger hit and reach out further and make me feel better equipped, but the problem of ammo availability concerns me and it appears at least that 5.56 and/or .223 is easier to find than .308 and the repair parts for the guns that run them as well. I need to pick up a basic DI AR to support my more exotic weapons to that end. Either a Colt or a S&W M&P ar on the short list.

I love my 6.8, but if I had to grab one gun and ammo bag heading out the door under duress never to return it would be my Sig 556.

One of the big things for me with the .223/5.56X45 AR15's is the .22 conversion kit that allows me to plink away all day at 25 yds. or so for less than $20 worth of ammo.

Congratulations on your outstandingly sound and discerning judgement on AR15s.
Those are the two .223 ARs I have. Might consider a Bushmaster, too, if there weren't so many OTHER guns I need/want (still not sure there's any difference there) more.

If you want to take 1.5 seconds per shot, with a bolt action, vs 6 shots in the same time, same hits, as the AR-15, you are welcome to your ignorance. Shtf will sort you out, quickly enough. If you want your 308 rifle and 200 rds, in mags, to weigh 25 lbs, along with the 35 lbs of other gear you need to last just a week, on your own, you are welcome to it, too. A 6 lb shorty AR, 6 spare 223mags, and 210 rds of 223 weigh a total of 13 lbs.

Me, for shtf, I'd a lot rather have a short AR, a 3/4 lb .22lr conversion unit, a spare 30 rd mag for same, and 1 lb of 22lr ammo (135 rds) and just 2 spare 223 mags and 90 rds, along with a 1 lb scope and mount, and 1 lb of sound suppressor. same 13 lbs, but a lot more capability. See thru mounts let you use either the iron sights or the scope. Return to zero scope base lets you remove and replace the scope without loss of zero. Same thing holds with SureFire's "snap on/off" flashhider and suppressors. An 11" barrel and 7" of "can" make for a still handy rifle, and don't kid yourself that it can't reliably hit you at 400 yds,if it's fitted out with a scope, bipod, match bthp's, trigger job, and free float tube.


Add 1 lb of pocket 9mm Diamondback, spare mag and ammo, and you have plenty of guns/ammo for the bugout.
