Chances are, you actually have coydog - progeny of coyote and dogs. Worst of coyote and no fear of humans like dog.

PWC has not deemed them a nuisance animal yet, but several neighboring counties have. I'm actually ok with the coyote right now. I would rather have them eating the field mice and water rats and staying well fed. Coyote tastes much better than rat. LOL

I had a coyote attack my dog in the backyard a few nights back. I thought I was gonna have to shoot it, but my Black Lab was kickin' his butt. When my Lab realized I was coming, he let the coyote go and it took off. He started acting submissive to me (I guess he thought he did something wrong), so to encourage him, I gave him a bunch of treats, cleaned him up a bit and spent positive time with him.

A dog who loves you is a lot more likely to obey and protect you compared to a dog that is afraid of you. Learn to establish your place as the alpha without being abusive and he will protect you and the family with his life. One of the best things for a survivalist to have is a loyal dog. It don't hurt if he weighs 80-100 lbs either.

I completely forgot about the whole pellet rifle thing. I have a beautiful 25 year old Benjamin Sheridan 4.5mm single shot bolt action (new ones are 20 cal). I love it, but I need a single pump and this one needs 6 or 7. Huge PITA if you need quick follow-up, but man, for turkey and rabbit, 1,000 FPS 4.5mm works with 1 shot most of the time.

Reverenddel wrote:THIS IS THE RESPONSE FROM THE HIPPIE/COMMIE EX-NEIGHBOR, THIS IS WHAT WE ARE UP AGAINST!:

This guy has no long term goals. Why do I say this, when he's obviously preparing for some apocalyptic collapse that will, in all truth, never actually happen to the levels that he's thinking?

Ok, so guy has a small military compound for him and his family and no one else. Not his friends, or extended family. Likely this will last a year or two max. Then he's gotta start bartering for supplies. Realistically, I doubt he's the kind of dude that barters, so much as shoots people and steals sh't when desperation sets in, but we will assume not for this case.

He's spent a year and such in a bunker with his family. The rest of us on the outside have banded together. We've been fighting crackheads, aliens, zombies, whatever, for a couple years now. They are late to the party, and now, seriously unequipped to deal with life outside. This is why prisoners go back to jail. Society moves forward, even if it's falling backward.

Sh't hits the fan, and I'm not going to a preppers house, know what I mean? I'm not gonna survive by the whim of the selfish. I'm gonna find me some hippies, burners, bohemians, people who barter goods and share skill sets as a way of life BEFORE sh't hits the fan.

Why? Because survival of all species is about diversity, not bottlenecking. Isolation equals extinction.

As a literature prof of mine once said:

"You know what's wrong with the parable of the grasshopper and the ant? It's backwards. The difference between a swarm of ants and a swarm of locusts is that the locusts never go hungry when the food supply runs out. Locusts don't have to hoard for the winter. They move on. They live in mass numbers like ants, but outside the anthill where it's dangerous and wild. They are the true survivors. That's why the bible never said anything about a swarm of ants. You step on those. You fear locusts."

MY RIPOSTE:

Preparing is about having a plan, and being ready for ANYTHING. Remember also, resources can go scarce. After Hurricane Katrina, and Sandy, you had thousands of people with nothing in their pantry, no self-protection, or a plan to get out. The governments failed each time on a local, state, and federal level.

You have been thru this crap with Isabelle. We had NO electricity for a week, with ICE cold water that was at time unavailable because of the pumps. The streets were clear, but they had NOTHING available. Think how much better it would have been to have a couple of battery operated fans, and solar rechargers, and water containers for washing when the water went out.

Now think what happens if the sewage backs up. (shrugs) Not everything is "Zombies", or "TEOTWAKI".

Your assumption that he's "isolated" couldn't be further from the truth. What he's talking about are people who do NOTHING, and expect OTHERS to tend to them, and keep them safe. He's got a "group", they probably own the land together, and probably have a nice training program, but it doesn't pay to TELL people things like that... then they start to EXPECT you to take care of them.

It's true a diversity can provide certain skills, but if I have to choose between hippies, potheads, and burners, or a group of Ex military special forces who have been preparing, training, and planning... I'm going with the guys who have been in combat.

Obviously, you've never met the Siafu Ants of Eastern Africa. They kill, eat, and travel... and are feared amongst the locusts, rats, and humans alike.

Just saying, "Buy a shotgun, and keep extra in pantry" It makes life easier.
Wow, his reasoning goes beyond being delusional!! Since he made a reference to wanting to be like a locust that definitely solidifies him as being a liberal. What a tool!

Great response rev

The only truly nonreactive container I could think of is glass, which is impractical. The cat sleeps in the crawlspace I'd store most of this in anyway, so mice shouldn'be an issue though I'd still seal it all anyway. I have a wood stove and more wood than I know what to do with, so there's fuel and heat.

These water bottles are made of very thick plastic that is stackable. Sealed and ready to go.

I think it's great that you'll be squirreling away some provisions sir. I'm not expert but if you need any advice, please don't hesitate to ask.

I am not an expert, and I don't have that model. However, I think I can talk to the technology, as I have a related model.

As you likely already know, the single best thing to do is to find one and fire it a few times to see how it works for you.

That said, the integrated silencing does it's job, and the IGT turns the springer into a quiet powerplant. It's less than half the sound of a normal springer. That might not be a big deal to you if you've heard a springer before, but it is quite a difference when you experience it.

If you buy it, make sure you loctite or otherwise caulk all the screws and nuts. The springers are known for making everything come loose (though do it after you've shot it a few times and determined you will not return it). Also, make sure the scope is rated for springers. The cause is the same: the springer's vibrations can turn most scopes to SH*T. You should note that even with the vibration damping technology, this is not like shooting a pre-charged gas/CO2 model, it still will have vibrations, and its exaggerated compared to a wood-stock model. I have read about Gamo people modifying wood stocks for their polymer-based gamos, as the weight helps with vibrations/firing; but then the weight also hurts if you are planning long trips (not a big deal if you are hunting the back yard for squirrels).

Lastly, I suggest .22 caliber, and go with lead. Heavy == better here.

Good luck if you buy. Let us (particularly me) know of your experiences.

In a post-SHTF world, of what utility is an air rifle that a normal firearm would not work as well for? Not arguing. Just confused.

If a post-SHTF world, you might find it very useful to obtain food (game) without telegraphing to the rest of the area that you obtained it (gunshot). Being an assassin of game is very useful in this situation.

Let me make it more clear: you shoot something, and hungry people know it, and they come to you to take your game [and/or other valuble survival items and/or life]. alternatively, you shoot something, no one hears it, and no one comes to take your game [Id.].

I am aware of such things, and I'd never recommend doing illegal acts, but when the SHTF, the relevance of law becomes blurry. Meantime, the air rifle is an excellent tool and I stay legal.

Thanks for trying to help though, the intent is very appreciated!

Like others have already stated... it's to not draw attention. If it be the attention of hungry people or combatants in or around the area.

Trapping small game is the best way to go, but if I need to walk a game trail or go looking for that small game, a pellet rifle or 22LR is way easier than a bow and arrow. Plus, anyone around is less likely to use audible traits to guess your direction and distance. Plus, compared to a 5.56 or 7.62, there will be more meat in better shape on small game.

Like I mentioned, I want an air rifle that is going to fit the bill. I have his amazing Benjamin Sheridan 397p. American Walnut stock, nickle plated brass barrel with 1 in 14 rifling, 1,000 FPS and 29 lbs of energy.

The down side is the 397p is as loud as my 22LR MP5 and my 22LR Savage bolt rifle. Since the MP5 holds 22 rounds and is a semi, I will likely use my MP5 if I don't find a nice air rifle. But discrete is the name of the game.

I am fairly sure I am going to try that suppressed riffle. Seems affordable and even if it doesn't seem like an improvement over the 22LR, at least I'll have a nice little plinker.

Hey, the only reason a man needs to buy a rifle is that he wants it.

Did you treat the water with anything? And what is the shelf life of water stored in the dark?

Food is easy to store (minimize light, humidity, oxygen, and vermin access), but I'm concerned about plastics leeching with stored water.

To treat water for storage, you either need to boil it first, or use bleach to treat very large amounts. Don't reuse plastic bottles or containers.

Use "household" chlorine bleach that contains 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite. Do not use bleach with soaps or fragrance added. Add the bleach using a clean, and uncontaminated medicine dropper. It typically is recommended that you use 4 drops of bleach per quart or liter container of water.

Commercially pre-bottled drinking water is good for about 1 year. All water in that container should be consumed within 2 weeks. Privately treated water is also good for about 1 year or until it starts to show signs of clouding up.

Like commercially bottled water, if you are opening a container after treatment and storage, it should be consumed within 2 weeks. For this reason, if you have privately stored water, make sure the containers are small enough that any water exposed to air wont be wasted. This container volume can only be determined by your specific needs.

Okay I dont usually like to say things that directly conflict with other advice, but if you have commercially packaged clean water, and you want to know how long its good for. You must consider two things:

1. Contamination by organisms.

2. Contamination by chemcials entering the water from the container packaging or from outside through the container packaging.

To point 1, being sterile, it should not gain growing organisms if its sealed. It just won't. Carbon dioxide in soda can stay for many years if the bottle is sealed, and it would pass through any barrier much easier than a large bacteria. Plus the high pressure CO2 will have much more push to get out. It doesnt happen.

To point 2, leaching doesnt happen. We are talking polypropylene polymers, purified and formed. Contaminants arent present, and they are locked in if they are present, just like the bottle cannot pass CO2, above. Further polypropylene is not subject to degradation from water or air. Any leeched stuff would have to be on the surface of the bottle at time of filling, and would be present in the freshly bottled water.

Therefore, you can keep bottled water indefinitely. I would use RO or distilled water. Its just less crap in the water to begin with. If theres less to begin woth, theres less stuff to grow on once opened.

Heres an article by a doctor that seems to onow thw same as me:

I would agree with everything except for the duration. Keep in mind, I did this for a living for more than a decade. This is not an "I think", "I heard" or "I read on the internet". Nestle, Avion, Coca-Cola, and all of the big companies have quality and safety info on their websites and all of them say about 1 year. Bottled water is not bottled in a sterile, 100% germ free, contaminate free vacuum.

Coca Cola and Nestle both say their bottles can be reused a maximum of 35 times, only if sterilized between uses. This is why I said don't reuse containers and commercial water and personally stored water should be replaced after about a year.

Regardless of what you may have heard, plastic is porous and can hold germs and most people don't have the ability to sterilize anything at home if it can't be boiled. Have you ever boiled a plastic bottle? LOL doesn't end well.
