Had to Google Bobby Thompson SI (much of the story broke before I moved here so I didn't know about it), apparently a skuzzy con-man duped quite a few people into thinking he was a saint and threw a lot of $ around to a lot of people, including KC. According to the article I read KC donated that $ to charity after the con artist was exposed, so I'm not seeing the "dirt" on this, just a bad decision that quite a few other politicians made in connection to this con artist.

Support common sense gun control measures
As Governor, Terry will support mainstream and majority supported gun control measures like universal background checks, limiting the size of magazines, and a return to the 1-gun-per-month rule. These measures respect Virginians’ right to bear arms while reducing gun violence.

Those measures do nothing to reduce violence and are a complete violation of the 2nd Amendment. That guy is full of it.

I would dispute that Ken's hand has ever been in whatever cookie jar you have defined it. Regardless, Ken recently cut a check to a Richmond charity out of his own personal funds (not campaign funds like with the Bobby Thompson example) for $18K which is the amount quoted as the gifts he received from the Star Scientific CEO.

On a historical note, one of the most fastidious, conservative Presidents, Calvin Coolidge, accepted many gifts from his friend Frank Stearns, a department store owner in Boston. All of it was legal. And there is no evidence that Coolidge ever did anything improper to help Stearns.

It is looking like it is a 5 or so point race. With only the Washington Post poll showing McAuliffe above 45%, and 7 to 20% being either undecided or Sarvis supporters. The question some folks need to ask themselves but don't want to ask is: If I vote for Sarvis will it help get McAuliffe elected? The follow on question to that should be (since so many people vote with an "It's all about me" mentality), who would be better for me and mine McAuliffe or Cuccinelli? It is not like McAuliffe has ties to the Democratic National Committee and their wonderful policies. He would never support gun control

It seems Virginia may very well be headed toward an election where the governor will be elected by less than half of the voters. Anybody thinking about Ross Perot these days?

A vote for your candidate of choice helps get that candidate elected, and if enough others feel the same way that person wins. No more, no less.

For those those saying Sarvis supporters should vote for KC, polling says it ain't gonna happen. Even Sarvis supporters that show a high percentage of support for our current gov have a high dissatisfaction for KC. If anyone is looking to Sarvis supporters to vote for KC, good luck. They just don't like what he's bringing to the table. Don't blame Sarvis for that. Blame the GOP.

I don't care what a president did 100 years ago. I could probably dig up examples on both sides of the aisles. What the hell does that prove?

Even if it is legal, an elected official accepting gifts is just wrong, unless they are bona fide friends or family members, and they are for a bona fide occasion. If some stranger, or some company, just came up to you and offered you a gift, or a free vacation, wouldn't that strike you as pretty silly - and suspicious? Of course it would.

The fact that he paid back $18k doesn't do much to alleviate the situation in my mind. He's paying it back because he got caught.

I'm getting a little tired of the guilt trip going on here that tries to equate people voting for Sarvis with voting for McAullife and for being a traitor to the GOP.

Don't you think that people have moral obligation to vote for the candidate that best reflects their views?

If the GOP continues to lose, don't you think the GOP is the one that needs to do a little introspection?

His hand was in an $18k cookie jar. Not sure why you are doubting that at this point.


He sure should have paid it back with his personal funds. I don't see why that's a noteworthy thing to do. One (or several) of the gifts he accepted was to put his family up at a lake house for a summer vacation. That sounds shady from beginning to end. Why can't he just pay for a vacations himself like the rest of us do, instead of accepting a gift from a stranger -- a stranger who happens to be a person who could benefit from KC's position. Sorry, it just doesn't pass my simple-minded ethics test, no matter how anyone tries to spin it. Just plain wrong.

Virginia is such a lovely state. It will be a shame to see what McAwful does to it. If we are very very lucky and retain a republican majority in the legislative we might get gridlock. What a wonder that has been for Washington.

The MSNBC video you used backs up the logic the logic that Sarvis is drawing more away from Cuccinelli than from McAuliffe. At about 1:22 "voters who otherwise might lean Republican, are instead picking the Libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis". Going the other way, the director from Marist Institute at about 2:02 said "McAuliffe has not passed the comfort level with voters, but certainly has big problems. The gender gap and those ads, is favorable unfavorable have flipped from our previous poll". That statement tells me that more than half of VA isn't too happy with either party's candidate. We still have almost 6 weeks until the election, Virginia will decide what direction it will head then. Undecided folks will jump off the fence then, some Sarvis supporters will vote for MacAuliffe and some will go for Cuccunelli.
