^^ Ha ha and I thought I was the only one that did that, SHMIV...

I wouldn't consider him a victim either... Intended victim, yes, but to establish him as a victim doesn't differentiate between those that are a) helpless or powerless to fight off the agression perpetrated upon them or b) lazy or immoral people who allow wrong and evil behavior to permeate society because they believe its someone's else's job to fight it, and they shouldn't be bothered with taking responsibility for their own safety and security...

If a person is trying to stab you regardless of the end results you are still considered a victim of a crime period... . Is it that hard to comprrehend? Not a intended victim... You may not consider it but the law does....

I like your example b- b) lazy or immoral people who allow wrong and evil behavior to permeate society because they believe its someone's else's job to fight it- Does your reasoning apply to young children and the old and defensless well?

That could be interpreted as threatening by the LEOs. I would put the firearm on the seat or on my truck's tonneau cover, and be empty-handed when they pulled up.
Hanging out by a dead man while holding a gun does seem less than wise. However, the dead guy had a friend, remember. Until the police showed up, the reappearance of the friend was a very real threat.
That's a very good point. I stand corrected.

i find it totally unnecessary that it is pointed out he had a concealed carry permission. he was not concealed carrying by VA law. the only reason i can see for the news paper pointing it out was because of their ignorance for the laws. but also it might be they had to come up with a reason he was not arrested

I thought to carry a loaded gun in your glove box or concealed in your vehicle you did need a CWP. Otherwise the transportation law of unloaded and not readily accessible to the driver was the law.

A year plus ago that was true. One of the recent law changes makes an exception:
10. Any person who may lawfully possess a firearm and is carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel.

Scary thing is that retrieving a loaded weapon from the glove box (I'm assuming it was loaded w/ a round in the chamber) under stress is not something that is probably practiced often. In the close confines of a car, with a passenger, there is a great risk of covering a passenger, a bystander, or even yourself.

As uncomfortable as it might be, I usually carry on my person when I am in the car. This seems more natural for me instead of reaching across the seat to fumble through the glovebox. At the same time, if I have to leave the car in a hurry, I have the firearm on me.

Thoughts?
I actually have a holster mounted under the dash, infront of where my left knee is, I can draw easily without a snag.

This story turned out the way I think it should of but the Shooter had to "Retrieve his handgun from a glovebox" seems pretty stupid to me. While it worked out in this situation, the idea that he had time to get his gun either "suggests" the attacker wasn't committed enough or that the victim had the time to remove himself form the situation. ..not that I'm saying he had to but a liberal DA could make the case. (Of course I'm just dealing with second hand info from an article.)

Also, and most importantly to my post in this thread, off body or car carry is just a liability. (Albeit better than nothing I guess.) How fast can a bad guy run up and stab you versus how fast you can retrieve your gun from a glovebox? I've seen some pretty horrendous knife wounds happen in a split second. While they may not kill the victim immediately like some Hollywood movie, they it could definitely fatally stun you.

If you can carry on your person, do so.

Reading all the different comments and the yahoo group page set up for this just makes me so sick. All the pansy do goods saying that the "man didn't deserve to die over money" well then I guess he shouldn't have come back with a damn knife after being told no already. This though was a product of society nowadays to hand out everything we work hard for, to others that are lazy and would just rather get it for free the easy way. Just like how our tax dollars are used in other toilet countries, I don't have any say in that, but I'll be damned if I will give money right out of my pocket. These people that say that he could have just backed away, called 911, yelled, screamed, and fought back like a man, just make me sick. So what did they think this guy was doing coming back to someone, that had already told him no, with a knife? People are just IDIOTS, and I'm sure they would be crying a different tune if it was them that had a knife pulled onto.
