Nice draft....
It is business, not buisness
It is a Concealed Handgun Permit
I'd suggest saying, "As the holder of a Concealed Handgun Permit issued under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I"
Make sure the list of things you are checked out on is correct.
Put a reference on, like State Police URL for their gun-laws page.

Also, would be nice to create a larger proof (higher resolution) so that it will print out nicely on business card stock.tursiops wrote:Nice draft....

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
Alright here is the revised copy, again criticism welcome.
This is a 14in x 8in image easily scaled down to a 3.5in x 2in business card. I think last time facebook resized them so this time I'm using the forum attachment feature but it only allows up to 600px.

Not criticism, but a suggestion... I would add; "I've had firearms training and demonstrated my competence with a handgun." Also, change shopping to going.Jakeiscrazy wrote:Alright here is the revised copy, again criticism welcome.

O i forgot that I'll definitively add it! I think I may change that to "have completely a firearms safety course." Since it isn't required that you shoot and doesn't have to be handgun specif.Chasbo00 wrote:Not criticism, but a suggestion... Hey Jake - what about adding a VGOF link on there (www. VGOF.net) and an emblem?

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
I took the verbiage about demonstrating handgun competence from the statute. I agree that it is somewhat misleading since there is no shooting or even a safe-handling performance drill required ; but, it is what the statute says.

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
I'm going to lead the part about insanity since there are multiple statues regarding it I fell it's easy to cover this way. Also most people would consider getting put in a mental hospital being declared insane. On the safety course thing your right so I'll use your original phrasing. Here is what the State police site says.Chasbo00 wrote:I took the verbiage about demonstrating handgun competence from the statute. @AIGThe court shall require proof that the applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun and the applicant may demonstrate such competence by one of the following........
I was think about doing the VGOF emblem in the left corner and moving the text to the right like the Ohio card. Thanks for catching the other mistakes.

"...persons adjudicated legally incompetent or mentally incapacitated;"
also might want to touch up: "... a illegal distributor..." to "an illegal distributor...".
nice work!

also... "eslewhere" to "elsewhere"....
And the VGOF logo looks a little squished... did you have resize to fit it?
Great job thus far, Jake!

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
if bullet #3 is rephrased to something like: "- Have had firearm training and demonstrated handgun competence.", it might fit on one line and allow the vgof logo to size larger.
also, you might want to make the bullet point formatting consistent, ex all with a space after the hyphen or all without. or maybe use a traditional bullet point character, ● ■ ♦, etc.
just thoughts...

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
I have nothing against VGOF or VCDL, but I'm not sure adding the logo of either one adds to the message to the store owner. The owner has heard of neither, so adding them does not add to credibility or give the message more meaning. The URL for the State Police makes the card more "official," rather than just the rantings of some kook or kook organizations with a beef.
The point of the card is not to advertise VGOF (or VCDL or whomever) but to explain that the sign on the door means dollars lost to the owner; anything else is irrelevant, including righteous indignation or quoting the Second A. If you want to put a logo on with some impact, then use the NRA logo....the owner will have heard of that and it sounds like a lot more dollars will be lost if he pisses off the NRA.
And it's elsewhere, not eslewhere. Proofread the darn thing!
Again, from the point of view of the store owner, what is the "Firearm Unfriendly...." list you mention? He's not heard of that, either. It is insider 2A jargon. If you want to keep it, buttress it with something about how many thousands of people monitor it, or something that sounds like dollars again.

Lol that's what spell check is for! But I'm using gimp and it doesn't have spell check. So I'm using the backup VGOF members!tursiops wrote:I have nothing against VGOF or VCDL, but I'm not sure adding the logo of either one adds to the message to the store owner. The NRA logo is copyrighted as is I'm sure the VCDL logo. It would be inadvisable to use such logos without express permission of the organization. VGOF gives them a place to go if they have further questions. It did have to be resized but I might have accidentally pulled it a little out of proportion I'll double check that. I might make it larger also. I think most people could deduce what a "Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia" list is. I can't think of a good simple phrasing to add afterwords. Suggestions on that?

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
Still think you should change "by shopping elsewhere" to by going elsewhere.
lots of businesses such as restaurants don't really involve shopping.
Also, why say "for your convenience?" Why not just say your business will be added to the published listing of firearm unfriendly businesses in Virginia.

Re: Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia
Jake, I don't want to seem cantankerous, but I would like to see this done effectively. Put yourself in the place of the store owner, and someone hands me a card that says he's going elsewhere and I'm losing his business and he's going to put me on some list. Well, I've already lost that guy, so what is this list? Is it some private poop (by the way, my submission did not use "poop," nice censoring software on here!) list he's got, or what? So I Google "Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia" and what pops up first? VCDL at http://www.vcdl.org/static/gue.html. Unfortunately, the second hit is VGOF, which has no list, just a bunch of posts, which the store owner might read, or not, but if he does the posts on here aren't probably going to be very compelling for him to change his policy. What does he care about? Bad PR, lost business. He isn't going to see much business lost from looking at either the VCDL or the VGOF sites. Just a bunch of gun nuts. And he won't see much bad PR, because all that bad PR on the list is just being seen by those same gun nuts. The list is preaching to the choir. He is only going to get worried if he sees a list that is getting outside the 2A folks, and being seen by lots of people....like maybe Tea Party folks, or all Republicans, or everybody military, etc. Enough people that the rethinks the sign on his door. So what can your card say that worries him? I guess the larger question is, how to get support outside our small community for that list of unfriendlies?I think most people could deduce what a "Firearm Unfriendly Businesses in Virginia" list is. I can't think of a good simple phrasing to add afterwords. Suggestions on that?
