Deals on decent AKs can sometimes be found at Sharpshooters...the ARs always seem too pricey for used...

No one has mentioned a Henderson Defense certified WASR? $439 plus shipping and transfer fee. I doubt there's a better deal going in the AK world right now.

If you don't mind a sporter configuration, the Saiga 7.62x39 is a solid gun. Pluses - brandy new, made in the Izhmash factory. Drawbacks - milsurp mags won't fit without modifications. (modifications drag up the specter of 922r compliance, too).
I'm still just using stock mags with mine...I've put about 500 rounds through it, flawless performance.

You might want to consider a used Saiga in 7.62x39. It is essentially a "sporterized" AK47 action without a pistol grip. All other features however are the same and it can accept high capacity magazines. (It normally comes with a 5 round hunting magazine) From used ones I have seen in stores it will be in your price range. If you get ambitious, you can convert it back to a pistol grip type rifle, but it takes some work.
Good Luck

.223/5.56..... matter of fact, I'm in the process of consolidating (selling) everthing that isn't 223/5.56/22LR, and 9mm.

I bought a Saiga 7.62x39 for $389 from Dark Sun at the last Dale City gun show. I'm most of the way done converting it. $500 gets you the rifle, two 30 round mags, and 200 rounds of ammo. They also come in .223, 5.45x39, and .308, as well as shotgun configurations.

You can get a M&P-15 Sporter for about $699. We've got one in stock, I believe. That's the cheapest NIB AR I've seen.

I would either do 1 or 2 things. If my budget was set in stone, I would pick up a SKS with a chrome lined bbl. I have one I have probly put 1500 rounds through without a hiccup. It will shoot the cheapest polymer & steel case ammo & it shoots straight. Spare parts for them are everywhere. You can also trick them out pretty good.

If you have the time & can save about a grand, you can pick up a Rock River Arms entry operator with a chrome lined bbl for about 1K
Lifetime warranties, 2 stage triggers, 6 pos adj stock, etc. IMHO

nothing is set in stone, 1k seems a bit much for me but i know that it is a reasonably price.

Here is the M&P-15 Sporter. It's a 1-in-8" rifling (good compromise twist), has no brass deflector (no big deal if you're right handed), no forward assist (no big deal) and no heat shields under the handguards (just don't machinegun it and you're good). Not something I'd take to war, but it's a good bang for the buck.

Now if you want something you CAN go to war with in the AR market, I'd go with a Spikes Tactical ST-15. They go for $850 and are 100% military-spec and ready to rock and roll. I want one myself.

Yes we are a Spikes Tactical dealer and always stock them if you want to come up and check them out. I strongly suggest you get your hands on one and check it out, and not because we sell them.

No. For a Saiga sporter you need to have a bullet guide installed (which requires either rivets or welding I forget) to use AK 30 round magazines. Both full or partial conversions can be done yourself, but if you don't have either the tools or the know-how to do it, it can get a little messy or expensive (if you need to pay someone to fix any of your mistakes.)
