Heh. Interesting discussion. The bottom line is that I don't want to have to practice as much as that guy did (he claims 1000 draws with some credibility) in order to avoid shooting myself. I want to have to have equipment that requires me to make a concerted effort to shoot myself rather than making it easy for me to do so.

Of those of you who have carried Serpas, have any of you had to draw under stress? Any issues?

This is kind of a bummer because I thought the thumb-drive holsters required an un-natural draw, while the Serpa fits perfectly with the way I was trained.

I have a SERPA that I bought for my full sized S&W M&P .40 for open carry. But since I so seldom open carry, I have almost no carry experience with it. Regardless, I'm replacing it with a Safariland ALS - I think the Safariland ALS is both a better and safer holster. It might not be a good choice for a 1911 or other single action with a thumb safety though.

The problem isn't the Serpa. If you disengage lock, even if you continue to press as you draw your finger ends up on the frame of the gun just like a draw with any holster is taught. The button is NOT over the trigger or trigger guard. If you can't keep your finger straight as your drawing you have not business using any holster. To Tex's credit he didn't blame the holster(although many have for him).

That was my take on this also, Jake. I own two of them. Your finger does not go down to the trigger at all. If anything the Serpa gets me to placing my finger in a perfect location, pointing straight in line with the barrel, along side the slide. I don't get this at all.

Here is what the guy who did the opinion video on Tex Grebner's shooting himself in the leg said on another forum:

The point is, if you had spoken to Mr. Grebner you would get a more complete opinion. He does see the SERPA as a liability and he does feel that is it his fault the mishap occred, but he also believes the SERPA contributed to the mishap. He's so confident that the SERPA is at least partially responsible, he is getting rid of his only SERPA holster and I doubt you'll ever see another video of his where one is featured (unless he decides to make another video about his mishap).

He didn't want to mention anything about the holster being unsafe in his video as he was fearful of the backlash, and rightly so. Look at the couple of posters in this thread that immediately resorted to insults and personal attacks because I dared to have an opinion that differed from their own. Some people are quick to ridicule, insult and taunt those that say something unfavorable about their brand of choice and Tex was fully aware of this and wished to avoid it. He knew he would be called an idiot for having the mishap, he didn't want to add fuel to the fire by mentioning any fault of the gear.

Get a holster you trust.

Period. Bianchi "M9's" have a flap. I like them for camping as they keep the pistol retained, and prevent slide damage.

However, I build my own leather holsters for carry... because I have weird preferences they don't build. Don't ask. I ain't got the bandwidth.

That it is; but, I very much doubt it's untrue.

There is of a lot room for reasonable yet divergent opinions on this event and the SERPA holster. The value is being aware of the event and appropriately applying the knowledge to your particular situation. Wisdom often comes from other's mistakes.
