Burial at sea was the right thing to do. At a high level, it demonstrates the USA is a magnanimous nation and we buried the terrorist within 24 hours, as per Muslim tradition. Reports are also that he was washed and wrapped in a sheet.

On a more machiavellian aspect, it prevents his grave from being a pilgrimage site and it highlights that no nation wanted his body.

"The land and the sea belong to God, who is able to protect and raise the dead at the end of times for Judgment Day," he said. "It's neither true nor correct to claim that there was nobody in the Muslim world ready to receive bin Laden's body."
