A 45 cal large meplat bullet will do what is needed just as it come from the factory, where the mouse guns will need expanding projectiles to be effective.
As some one said 'A 45 cal. will not shrink when it hits the target.'

Buffalo Bore has a retro bullet option in lieu of hollow points - hardcast bullets.

I think it's a good option for the .380 in particular given the .380's limited penetration depth with hollow points.

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I have a matched pair of Saeco four cavity 130 grain 357 molds. These nifty little bullets work wonderfully in several 357 mags, a bucket full of 38 specials, and a couple Browning High Powers.

I like the Federal HST's best, but my second choice is Speer Gold Dots, followed by Winchester Ranger T's.

Why not go for Glaser safety slugs or Magsafe Ammo both are very effective on Tissue :enlighten:

Not very effective if you're shooting through heavy clothing or a hard barrier, though...

Since you are talking 380 ammo...I have researched this quite a bit. In a short barreled 380 none of the better hollow points expand with any regularity. Some of the best only expand 25% of the time and none have decent penetration. I just buy a name brand FMJ and call it good in my pocket 380.

In 9mm I like the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p.

I would also feel comfortable with the 124gr HST +p and the 127gr Ranger T +p+.

I actually want to try out some of the HSTs, but I am happy with the performance of the GDs and they cycle reliably in my G26 and my girl's Ruger LC9, so I'll probably stick with them. Now that I know the GD's are available for $27 for a box of 50 I spend a lot more time training with them than I did when I was just buying the 20rd $20 boxes.

the better standard loads would have to be hornady critical defense with the polymor tip...it allows the bullet to get threw thick clothing without filling up the hollowpoint...but it still acts like a hollow point when it hits flesh...but above factory standards the winner would have to be DOUBLE TAP ammo....it is awesome!

This has been informative, I carry Hydrashock in my carry 9mm, didn't know about the heavy clothing issue, good to know as we head into winter, will have to get something else now.

Haven't even fired the .45 yet (tomorrow!) so I don't have it in the glove box yet (car gun), but based on just looking at those big fat heavy FMJ's.....I don't think I need to carry JHP in it.

I've shot some .380 DT out of my LCP... 95 Gr @ 1150 fps... I haven't shot much of it at that speed!! I do carry that in my little .380 though...

BUMP!

I guess I never told anyone but when I finally found Speer Gold Dots in 380 at my local store I bought some for the LCP. Been carrying them for a couple months now.
Also just recently I noticed Speers in .32. Does anybody even use that for personal protection? The only guns which shoot it are the cheap Kel-tecs and Beretta Tomcats and both have reliability concerns.
